Background

The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences is a world-leading School that performs cutting-edge and translational research in all aspects of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation. We are seeking to appoint a full-time Assistant in Exercise Prescription who will contribute to research, teaching, and administration. The role holder will be expected to show excellent academic citizenship, likely to be demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful, and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.

We would welcome applications from individuals that can evidence involvement in clinical exercise physiology or exercise prescription, with a clear vision for maximising the impact of this developing discipline. We welcome applicants who can clearly articulate how their research and scholarly activity informs and shapes their teaching. In addition, we are keen to attract and support individuals working at the top of their field and able to demonstrate high-quality research outputs and impacts. You will be joining a thriving community of physiologists, physiotherapists, psychologists, and sports scientists with access to excellent research and teaching facilities. We work closely with clinical centres of excellence and are excited to extend our research and impact for the communities we serve via a new state-of-the-art Exercise and Rehabilitation Facility (ERF) due to open in January 2023.

About you

You will have a clear research vision, a growing national reputation, and a track record of research in an area aligned with clinical exercise physiology or exercise prescription. Your research will have clear translational or applied elements that generate impactful outcomes in exercise and rehabilitation contexts. Through collaboration across disciplinary areas within the School and University, you will deliver impactful outcomes within the field of exercise prescription and generate research income through external and/or commercial funding.

In education, you will be an inspiring educator, able to communicate your work to researchers, undergraduates, and the public. You will contribute to programme delivery, leadership, and enhancement in exercise physiology, ensuring an excellent educational experience for your students.

In management and administration, you will contribute to the leadership and management of areas of activity in the school with the potential for University wide involvement - for example through sustained high-value research, knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement or similar activities.

Main Duties

Research

Planning and carrying out research, including (as appropriate):
  • planning and publishing high-quality research in the field of exercise physiology, including winning financial support;
  • project managing research activities, and/or supervising other research staff;
  • presenting findings in publications and conference proceedings;
  • effectively supervising and mentoring PhD students;
  • providing expert advice to staff and students within the discipline;
  • participating in research-related enabling activities such as adding value to a cross-disciplinary network;
  • applying knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding;
  • developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise (including business engagement, public engagement) and similar activities.

Education

Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students, including (as appropriate):
  • teaching and examining courses at a range of levels;
  • planning and reviewing your own teaching approaches and encouraging others to do the same;
  • designing contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content;
  • working collaboratively with colleagues to design and deliver teaching, learning and assessment;
  • using digital resources/environments effectively to support learning and assessment;
  • developing programme proposals and making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely;
  • where appropriate, undertaking and developing the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining;
  • developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods;
  • developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement activities or similar on own specialism that enhances the student experience or employability and which benefits the College and University;
  • devising and supervising projects, student dissertations and practical work.
  • Management/Administration

Contributing to Departmental/School administration, including:
  • contributing to the administration/management of research and/or teaching across the Department/School;
  • leading and managing a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive);
  • advising on personal development of colleagues and students;
  • making a major contribution to some administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups);
  • managing enterprise, business development, and public engagement activities;
  • developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, school outreach.
  • actively manages equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.

Person Specification

Essential
  • Doctoral qualification in a research area related to exercise physiology (or close to completion).
  • Experience and achievement reflected in a developing reputation in a research area related to clinical exercise physiology or exercise prescription
  • Evidence of teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning and research

Research
  • Experience and achievement are reflected in a growing national reputation in the field of clinical exercise physiology
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high-quality results
  • Extensive experience in applying and/or developing and devising successful models, techniques, and methods
  • Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise, and similar activity

Teaching
  • Ability to design, deliver, assess, and revise teaching programmes.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues.
  • Experience in post-graduate supervision at master's and/or doctoral level.
  • An appropriate level of experience in supporting placement education in health care settings.
  • Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability.

Management Administration
  • Ability to contribute to School management processes.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in own work area.
