Project: An observational study of efficacy and utility of Cxbladder tests in the identification of low vs high risk patients and the detection of urothelial carcinoma in patients presenting with hematuria


The Center for Veterans Research and Education (CVRE), whose mission is helping to support innovative research and education initiatives that improve the health and well-being of Veterans, is seeking a Research Assistant/Research Coordinator. The research assistant will work primarily on a multi-center VA study examining the utility of a novel urine test to detect bladder cancer in those at risk.

Project: Diagnostic evaluation for those with blood in the urine includes both CT scan to look at the kidneys, and cystoscopy to evaluate the bladder. Cystoscopy is an invasive procedure often done awake, and can be uncomfortable and is a risk for urinary tract infection. This study is to examine a urine test, Cxbladder, and its ability to identify patients who do not have bladder cancer, allowing them to forego cystoscopy.

Responsibilities: Major duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Actively recruit patients to the study and maintain screening logs and mailing out approved study information.
  • Engage the patient in the consent process and obtain Informed Consent signatures from participants.
  • Processing and shipping of urine samples
  • Conducting medical chart reviews and extrapolating relevant data.
  • Coordinating meetings and following up on delegated activities of the work group.
  • Collaborating with research and clinical staff and pulling of relevant reports.
  • Preparing reports and regulatory items for submission to the Research and Development Committee and Institutional Review Board at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, as well as other agencies.
  • Maintain professional clearances/ human research studies training
  • Assist with IRB reviews and audits
  • Interact with study sponsor and submit data in accordance with protocols

  • Bachelors degree in a science or related health field from an accredited college or university, or combination of education and experience.
  • Research experience dealing with data collection and data storage, human subject studies, institutional review board processes, and consenting subjects is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word and Excel
