Do you have a passion for diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI)?
Would you like to improve DEI in PGR recruitment in environmental science?
The Panorama DTP is a partnership between 6 schools at the University of Leeds (Earth and Environment, Geography, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Civil Engineering), the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory at the University of York and the Energy and Environment Institute at the University of Hull. The DTP is focussing on all aspects of environmental research and encompasses three broad themes: Atmosphere and Climate, Earth Processes, and the Living World . These themes reflect the multidisciplinary nature of the research within the DTP. The resulting dynamic research environment offers PhD students the rare opportunity to develop a unique set of skills across several disciplines in both basic and applied sciences. The DTP recruits graduates who have studied a wide range of subjects including chemistry, physics, biology, Earth sciences, geography, environmental science, mathematics, engineering, computing and relevant related disciplines.
We have recently been awarded funding for a project to improve diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) in postgraduate research. The proposed activities for this project aim to better understand the diversity of the Panorama DTP applicants throughout the recruitment stages, identify potential barriers to applications for PhD study from underrepresented groups based on a number of characteristics, and avenues to remove barriers and increase applications and offers to candidates from underrepresented groups. The project will also investigate possible retention problems related to culture and practices during PhD studies within the different DTP cohorts, with a focus on the Panorama training program.
To support our efforts to widen participation in PhD studies across our three partner campuses we are recruiting a DEI Research Assistant (RSA) to scrutinize our recruitment processes, understand the pool of talent we are addressing and to develop Panorama wide approaches to increase successful applications from underrepresented groups and support applicants throughout the recruitment process.
