The Center for Health and the Environment (CHE) is a Center located within the Institute of the Environment (IE), whose faculty members perform research related to the health effects of chemicals on animals and humans. The role of this position is to provide technical laboratory support for the faculty supervisor, Dr. Laura Van Winkle, by conducting research, as directed, in the field of respiratory biology and toxicology. Specifically, this position will function to lead molecular and biochemical studies and work as part of a team to integrate these studies with ongoing histopathology work in the lung. This position also provides support and training for individuals using microscopes and tissue processing equipment as part of a core facility. This position is not remote and requires on site job performance. Job Summary This position functions as Laboratory Manager/Imaging Core Manager for the Van Winkle Lab and Cellular and Molecular Imaging Core facility and works closely with the Lab PI to coordinate experiments and provide expertise on equipment use to students, collaborators and core users. No. of Positions 1 Appointment Type Career Percentage of Time 50% - 75% (Variable) Shift Hours Monday - Friday (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) Location UC Davis Union Representation RX Benefits Eligible Yes Apply by Date 5/18/2022 PHYSICAL DEMANDS * Ability to lift up to 25lbs. * Be able to perform repetitive motions; pipetting, typing on computer keyboard. * Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of potentially infectious materials. * May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous, radioactive and/or chemical materials are present. * Manual dexterity to use small tools for dissection. * Ability to distinguish colors in images. WORK ENVIRONMENT * Occasionally travel between CHE and main campus. * This position is subject to medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. * This position is subject to UCD's vaccination program (Influenza, SARS-CoV-2), and Medical/Health Surveillance Program/Procedures/Review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. * This position is not eligible for remote work, due to the nature of the essential responsibilities. Typical work schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (within those hours). Alternate schedules on weekdays are also possible by agreement and for less % time. * UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Additional Minimum License/Certification: Minimum Education/Experience: * A Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry or toxicology (or related field) with >1-2yrs laboratory experience or a research-based Masters degree. Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : * Skill to perform mathematical calculations necessary to prepare chemical solutions at specific concentrations, molarity and normality and to prepare analytical reagents, solutions, controls and standards. * Ability to manage daily operations of laboratory and supervise student assistants. Ability to document safety and research compliance, train students in basic skills and coordinate schedules, assist PI with prioritization and scheduling of studies. Willingness to provide service and communications in support of users for CAMI core facility including intake, documentation, training and re-charge. * Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals in an effective manner using strong oral, written, phone and computer skills. * Ability to keep accurate records with attention to detail. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Additional Preferred License/Certification: Preferred Education/Experience: * Skill and experience in rodent handling, routine injections, necropsy and management of genetically modified rodent colonies (mice, rat). Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : * Knowledge of sample preparation techniques used in collection and preparation of tissues for histopathology (paraffin, resin and/or frozen histologic sections). * Knowledge of light, fluorescence and/or confocal microscopy. * Ability to read and understand scientific literature. * Knowledge of QA/QC concepts and ability to apply this knowledge to continuously produce high quality data with complete and accurate records and to troubleshoot problems. * Data entry skills to enter test results in excel and to analyze data using graphing and statistics. * Familiarity with basic molecular and biochemical assays including purification of RNA and DNA and use of qRT-PCR and biochemical assays using a plate based reader. * Knowledge of sterile technique and cell culture. * Knowledge and skill in approaches for Immunochemical detection of proteins in tissues, by Western Blot and with immunoassay.
