We are currently searching for a Post-Doc to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This opportunity is full-time, and it is onsite in Bethesda, MD and/or remote work.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide support to the sub-group involved in the study of pathophysiology of acute pain in sickle cell disease (SCD) in humans and humanized animal models of SCD, mainly mice.
  • Conduct research projects to advance the scientific goals of the PI/chief of the Sickle Cell Branch.
  • Perform a variety of specialized laboratory techniques in mouse studies, flow cytometry, biochemistry, immunology, and cellular, and in support of the scientific research program of the Laboratory of Sickle Cell Genetics and Pathophysiology, Sickle Cell Branch, NHLBI.
  • Maintain detailed records of laboratory experiments and perform statistical analysis of data, prepare tables, charts, graphs, summaries, and other materials for inclusion in publications.
  • Evaluate and interpret results for validity and scientific meaning.
  • Prepare summaries of experiments and contribute to the evaluation and discussion of results in weekly lab and branch meetings.
  • Provide direct responsibility for the sickle mice studies.
  • Study, adapt, and/or develop new techniques needed to answer new research questions.
  • Provide training and guidance to students, fellow and other NHLBI staff members in the SCB in the use of equipment/laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Maintain supplies needed for research experiments.
  • Recognize and help to resolve significant issues and provide ongoing updates of research activity progress.
  • Provide technical expertise for substantial and effective contributions to research through scientific discussions with NHLBI laboratory staff and collaborators, as well as actively teaching methods at the lab bench.
  • Contribute as an author and/or co-author in the writing and preparation of scientific papers for publication in recognized journals.
  • Initiate independent research on genetic modifiers of fetal hemoglobin.
  • Present new research data in group settings, at meetings or seminars.
  • Stay abreast of new methodologies and techniques as needed.
  • Participate in scientific conferences as appropriate.


Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in a scientific field. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Master's degree is equivalent to a Ph.D. Five (5) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor's degree is equivalent to a Ph.D.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in clinical research, molecular biology, and related fields.
  • Strong background in either genetics/genomics, biochemistry, immunology or molecular biology, as demonstrated by first-author publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively and persuasively with a wide range of audiences, ranging from researchers to students.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills to prepare a variety of responses, meeting materials, technical and administrative correspondence and reports.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize complex tasks.
  • Time management and organizational skills to work efficiently and independently or as part of a team.
