Position Information

Proposed Faculty Rank Assistant Lecturer Career Line Department 00095 - Dept of Writing and Rhetoric City Salt Lake City, UT Track Non Tenure Track New Position to Begin July 1, 2022 Details

The Department of Writing & Rhetoric Studies (WRS) at the University of Utah invites applications for the full-time, career-line (non tenure-line, renewable five-year contract) position of Assistant Professor (Lecturer). The position would officially begin 1 July 2022, with initial teaching in Fall 2022. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate will teach 3 courses during each Fall and Spring semester (on a nine-month, full-time contract) and will have priority choice for optional summer-term teaching, which pays at a per-section rate above the base salary. Teaching will be assigned in required lower-division writing courses and in select upper-division courses outlined below. Depending on qualifications, interest, and needs, career-line faculty can also offer courses in the department's undergraduate major and minor in Writing & Rhetoric Studies, as well as graduate-level courses in the department's graduate program in Rhetoric and Composition.

Minimum qualifications include a PhD in rhetoric and composition or a closely related field and a record of teaching excellence in relevant courses. Applicants with experience and interest in teaching upper-division courses in business and technical writing, scientific communication, and WAC/WID development are encouraged. We also welcome expertise in teaching in multilingual, multimodal contexts, and in such areas as queer, disability, ethnic, and gender studies, online learning, and writing program administration. Applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and rapidly growing department, one that has a long-standing first-year writing program, a vibrant undergraduate major, master's and PhD programs in Rhetoric and Composition, a new certificate in professional and technical writing, and the University Writing Center (http://writing.utah.edu/). As a department, we embrace transdisciplinary approaches to writing and rhetoric studies, and we are deeply committed to supporting diverse scholarly interests and methodologies, valuing global rhetorical traditions and language practices, structuring opportunities for students of all backgrounds and identities to learn and grow, and promoting reciprocal relationships with two- and four-year institutions throughout our region and with both local and global communities. Located in Salt Lake City, the U of U is an integral part of a diverse and growing urban region.

Our department is committed to equity and diversity. We believe that diversity is key to providing and fostering critical, civil, and inclusive education. We strive to provide learning environments where respectful speech and attentive listening are extended to everyone. This respect extends to people of all ages, gender identities and expressions, sexual orientations, physical abilities, neurological and sensory processing, races, ethnicities, tribal affiliations and citizenships, nationalities, countries of origin, documentation status, language backgrounds, religious affiliations, political viewpoints, socioeconomic backgrounds, and educational pathways. We strive to see these differences as strengths and as opportunities to build empathy and reciprocity around our different locations and positions. Questions, discussions, and respectful debate and civil disagreement are encouraged and indeed expected.

To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, and a one-page teaching philosophy statement. Additional materials will be requested of candidates who advance in the search, including evidence of teaching effectiveness (possible examples include: student course feedback, peer observation letters, teaching awards, etc.), a one-page diversity statement, and three letters of recommendation. Questions about the position may be directed to Professor LuMing Mao, Chair of the Department of Writing & Rhetoric Studies, at luming.mao@utah.edu. Application review will begin on February 18, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled.
