Discovery Partners Institute

Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist

University of Illinois System - Chicago

Search Extended

The Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) empowers people to jumpstart their tech careers or companies in Chicago. Led by the University of Illinois System in partnership with some of the world's top research institutions, DPI does three things centered around economic development: tech talent development for high-demand tech jobs; applied research and development; and building a stronger tech ecosystem. DPI prepares students and workers to step into high-demand tech jobs. It also builds research teams and matches them with new funding. With state investment and a new innovation district in development, DPI has the resources to attract, develop and leverage the most ambitious people and companies the region has to offer - and keep them here.

DPI invites nominations and applications for Research Scientists and Senior Research Scientists. These roles offer an extraordinary opportunity to help shape and drive one of DPI core missions: Research & Development. These positions bring together research initiatives by coalescing teams of faculty and scientists across institutions and disciplines. Research Scientists are principal contributors in developing specific research project requirements and are responsible for all aspects of the project from conception to finding funding through execution.

Research Scientists must demonstrate leadership, for example, as principal investigator, as head of a defined research project, or as key interstitial members of research teams. They must provide overall program/project leadership and management, conduct and publish self-initiated research, conduct research across programs or projects, train and manage other researchers or staff, and participate in long-range research planning. Research Scientists are expected to work closely with both our internal R&D team members as well as the external members of our Science Teams. DPI is especially interested in supporting research that is relevant or provides economic benefit to the state of Illinois and has commercialization potential. Experience in commercialization is preferred.

Duties:

  • Provide intellectual, strategic, and visionary leadership for DPI's R&D enterprise
  • Perform original research resulting in principles and methods, as well as development tools and artifacts and other forms of intellectual property, and document them in scientific publications
  • Identify and prepare research proposals to federal, state, non-profits, and industry partners
  • Bring scientific initiatives together involving faculty members and scientists from DPI institutions and extend these initiatives to include partners from industry and government organizations.
  • Plan, coordinate, implement and perform research using scientific methodologies in an efficient and ethical manner
  • Supervise research activities of research staff assigned to the project(s), including (but not limited to) a Project Director, Post-Doctoral Research Associates, Research Specialists and Graduate Research Assistants as well as Visiting Scholars and other research staff.
  • Manage the project throughout its life cycle, ensuring that the research objectives are on schedule in accordance with the sponsor's expectations.
  • Communicate personal and general DPI R&D research activities and results to industry partners.
  • Liaise with higher education partners to identify new opportunities and coalesce researchers around specific areas of interest.
  • Work closely with internal R&D Team members and external Science Teams
  • Additional duties as required
Qualifications:
  • Candidates with a Ph.D. degree in a computing-relevant field in progress may be considered (occasionally, additional years of significant research experience can be considered in lieu of a PhD). Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Minimum of four years' experience in managing a research program or team. (Seven years required for the Senior Research Scientist title)
  • Possess and apply advanced knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices, and methods.
  • Experience in leading externally funded research projects, building research teams, and conducting research across institutions strongly preferred.
  • The candidate should have an in-depth knowledge of the funding agency priorities and processes within their field.
  • Work well in a dynamic start-up like environment.
