Post Doctoral Scholar-Plant Science

The Laboratory of Mark Guiltinan and Siela Maximova in the Department of Plant Science at The Pennsylvania State University at University Park, PA seeks a Post Doctoral Scholar. We seek to employ a highly motivated scientist to conduct research on the genomics and development of Theobroma cacao, the chocolate tree as part of an interdisciplinary team. We have developed a combination of genomics, metabolomic and functional genomics approaches to discover new genes and pathways useful in the genetic improvement of cacao and have acquired very-large datasets to enable new discoveries. We seek applicants who have experience in exploring diverse and large biological datasets using advanced statistics to join our team. The primary focus will be on identifying high priority candidate genes for disease resistance mechanisms, but could also include collaborations on developmental regulation of phase change and flowering, seed quality traits (flavor, triglycerides, flavonoids) and discovery of metabolites with potential nutritional or biomedical applications. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work well in a collaborative research environment are essential.

Application Requirements:

Applications must be submitted electronically and include a resume that includes educational background, publications, and work experience (Ph.D. thesis and beyond), as well as a brief statement of research interests and goals. Please also provide contact information for at least three references.

Education and Experience:

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field (plant sciences, genetics, plant breeding or related disciplines with strong experience in bioinformatics, gene expression analysis and statistics) and provide evidence all requirements have been meet for the completion of the Ph.D. prior to the effective date of hire. This is a limited term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
