Position Summary

Research Informatics division at City of Hope is seeking a Senior NLP Scientist with expertise in applying Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract knowledge from biomedical text documents. The NLP scientist would have a strong background in computer science and be responsible for providing informatics as well as technical leadership in the design, development and execution of biomedical language processing for various research and clinical informatics focused project needs. This position entails the use of NLP techniques to derive knowledge from unstructured texts embedded within disparate document types in electronic medical records, biomedical literature, clinical trials and other information management systems. Any previous experience working at a Cancer Research Center is preferred but not required. Software engineering skills that include programming knowledge, experience with software development life cycle and software implementation in a production environment is a must. Experience with commercial solutions such as I2E from Linguamatics would be valuable. The Senior NLP Scientist will collaborate closely with all stakeholders and publish their scientific findings in reputed informatics and/or medical journals. Presentations in scientific and technical conferences will be encouraged. The candidate must be a self-starter, highly motivated, creative problem solver, critical thinker, value continuous learning and receptive to feedback.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Provides biomedical NLP, text mining and informatics expertise to Center for informatics project needs while working closely with all concerned colleagues. Software development using Java or other object oriented language.

• Interacts directly with the appropriate staff members (e.g., physicians, clinical technicians, department managers, project sponsors and various other members of the organization) to obtain and document business and/or technical requirements. Provides support to end-users for various NLP applications. Assists other department staff members as necessary

• Researches problem domain and accurately summarizes current state relative to project scope, as defined by the project sponsor or as a result of systems analysis investigation. Responds to requests for information within established time guidelines. Provides information requested and ascertains if additional information would be of help. Participates in pilot studies without compromising current operating standards.

• Applies standard analysis methodology to appropriately investigate and document project (e.g. flowcharts, requirements specification, technical specification); work must adhere to all applicable standards. Demonstrates the ability to organize work assignments effectively, develop priorities and follow through with accuracy. Exhibits good judgement, initiative, emotional maturity, stability and tact. Able to work with fellow staff members to achieve and execute agreed upon (collective) solution.

• Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to maintain certification and/or keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. Attends meetings as required, and participates on committees as directed. Maintains a positive image when dealing with department personnel and other City of Hope employees.

• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

• Bachelor's Degree in a related field of study (computer science, computational biology, artificial intelligence, data science, biomedical informatics, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, biomedical engineering).

• 5+ years' in natural language processing (NLP), machine learning and applications, developing information retrieval and extraction techniques using NLP demonstrated through scientific publications and/or successful product development, expertise in the use of controlled clinical terminologies and ontologies (UMLS, SNOMED, ICD, LOINC etc.), knowledge of statistical modeling and machine learning/deep learning techniques, data analysis and visualization tools, software engineering and development experience in Java, scripting languages, command line, first author publications in informatics journals/conferences.

OR

• Master's Degree in a related field of study (computer science, computational biology, artificial intelligence, data science, biomedical informatics, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, biomedical engineering) with 3 years of experience

Preferred education experience and skills:

• PhD in a computational and quantitative discipline (e.g., computer science, artificial intelligence, biomedical informatics, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, biomedical engineering) or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence with focus on NLP and its applications to healthcare or Biomedical Informatics.
