Position Summary:

The school nurse will support student success by providing health care and education through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse will address the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and support their achievement in the learning process.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with students, parents, school staff, and administration to maintain a safe and healthy environment and promote an optimal level of wellness to enhance the educational process of all students.
  • Provide direct care to support student health needs.
  • Administer medications and perform limited procedures to students in accordance with the Colorado Nurse Practice Act. Procedures may include, but are not limited to, bladder catheterization, gastric tube feeding, nebulizer treatments, insulin injections, Epi-pen injections, Diastat administration, Glucagon injection, and toileting.
  • Create individual health care plans for students identified with safety concerns and/or significant health conditions including acute, chronic, or life-threatening conditions.and communicate these plans to staff who have direct contact with the student.
  • Generate and maintain meticulous and accurate health records of clinical activities like daily health office visits, medication dispensed, and individual student health care concerns. Provide staff with updated student health concerns list at the start and throughout the year when changes are made.
  • Coordinate vision and hearing screening at the building level, conduct screenings including new students to the district/school, students with IEPs and students referred to by staff. Document screening results, complete referrals and follow-ups.
  • Gather and provide student health information to the MTSS and Special Education Team following the guidelines as required by the state on all special education students with Individual Education Plan (IEPs).
  • Monitor and maintain immunization records per state immunization requirements. Contact parents of non-compliant students. Provide updates to Administration of progress of the compliance process; use the state immunization database for state compliance. Submit an annual immunization report to the state.
  • Monitor the school health offices. Keep in an orderly manner; order supplies and keep supplies stocked; document inventory.
  • Train, delegate and monitor health paraprofessionals and other unlicensed personnel per district policies, states law and Nursing regulation.
  • Act as a resource and consultant to all LSE staff, students, families and community health providers. Works to remove, modify or reduce health-related barriers to learning.
  • Provide nursing service that aligns with State and Board of Nursing guidelines. Apply nursing theory and ethics as the basis for decision making.
  • Coordinate and establish guidelines, procedures and training in First Aid/CPR for all LSE staff.
  • Consult on communicable disease prevention, control and public health issues through collaboration with the Local health department.
  • Collaborate with LSE Attendance, MTSS, SPED and 504 teams. Serve as a health liaison to support student attendance and academic performance. Delineate accommodations and/or modifications required for learning when indicated by health or developmental status.
  • Assume responsibility for attending professional development and continuing education opportunities that contribute to best practices.

Miscellaneous Duties:

Perform other job-related duties as assigned including attending field trips for students with medical concerns, compiling and preparing reports, attend district training to maintain compliance, or other duties as assigned by building administration.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited College or University.
  • Must be licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Colorado.
  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a valid Colorado Professional Special Services Provider License with endorsement as a School Nurse within 6 months.
  • Must possess a current certificate for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and be able to renew it as required.
  • Must have 2-3 years of current clinical experience
  • Must have basic computer, office, and communications skills

Suggested Qualifications:
  • Bilingual Spanish
  • Previous school nursing experience
