J&J Editorial is a growing organization that supports the editorial management of a variety of scholarly publications, primarily academic journals. J&J's employees are experts in helping editorial offices set priorities and create the workflow necessary for submission growth and timely publication.

About the Role:

The Copyediting Client Manager is the primary contact for the assigned client on the copyediting team. The CM oversees the copyediting team working for that client as overseen by the Copyediting Services Coordinator.

How you will make an impact:
  • Internal interactions:
    • Works directly with the Services Coordinator to develop teams and share employees effectively; (re)distribute tasks, as needed.
    • Identifies and addresses any problems with tasks/employees.
    • Keeps Services Coordinator well informed of any issues with client tasks or employees. This may include employees who are doing well and may be ready for advancement or hiring needs as the amount of work increases.
    • Responsible for the institutional knowledge for their client(s) (e.g., maintain protocols, have thorough knowledge of applicable style guides, etc.)
    • Ensures that all employees responsible for task(s) of a given client are fully trained on current protocols, appropriate systems, and best practices.
    • Conducts and/or contributes to performance reviews for direct and/or indirect reports.
    • Approves employee vacation or sick time, ensures coverage plans are in place, and ensures time off is detailed on company-wide calendar.
    • Improves internal processes, protocols, and best practices for their respective client group.
    • Familiar with the skills and professional ambitions of all team members.
    • May be responsible for sending monthly hours worked on client projects to Partners for invoicing.
    • Responsible for monitoring productivity and tracking individual workloads, including checking and approving time sheets.
    • Serves as a resource for answering employee questions about J&J company policies, as well as enforcing those policies.
    • Maintains some level of day-to-day work on one or more client facing projects.
    • Shows engagement and leadership with J&J company culture.
    • Continues to learn about and utilize industry-level publishing concepts.
    • Upholds high standards of professionalism and courtesy when working with colleagues and clients as outlined in the J&J Employee Handbook. Ensures the work environment is free of non-work-related distractions and provides the same environment for co-workers
  • External interactions:
    • Serves as primary point of contact for client regarding the services J&J provides to client.
    • Is ultimately responsible for the day-to-day completion of tasks and overall client satisfaction.
    • Builds relationship with client contacts to expand J&J's relationship with client where relevant, including educating them on the various services J&J can provide.
    • Travels as needed to client meetings and industry conferences.

What we are looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant course of study.
  • Minimum 2 years experience at J&J and/or relevant other publishing or professional copyediting experience.
  • Minimum of 1 years intensive team collaboration that shows potential for growth in employee management skills, or prior employee management experience.
  • Experience as Copy Editor or Senior Copy Editor at J&J for the client they will be managing, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience directly managing client projects, including day-to-day direct client contact, and has demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated interest/involvement in professional society or societies.
