Do you have a research interest in the history of the British Army between 1790 and 1820?
Are you interested in how archival records can be reconfigured through digital humanities technologies?
Are you an academic with proven abilities to deliver research-led teaching in British History, with a focus on the armed forces and society?
Do you have the ability to motivate and inspire students?
This is an exciting opportunity to both work on an AHRC-funded research grant and contribute to the research-led teaching in the School of History.
You will carry out teaching in British history, with a focus on the armed forces and society, in particular the Level 3 Special Subject Y=202223&M=HIST-3685">HIST3685 Georgians at War, the level 2 option Y=202223&M=HIST-2505">HIST2505 Archive Intelligence, and the MA module Y=202223&M=HIST-5540M">HIST5540M Defending the Nation. You will supervise Final Year Projects, support a cohort of personal tutees, and contribute to core and team teaching as appropriate within the context of the 0.6FTE of your role which will be dedicated to student education related activities.
You will dedicate the remaining 0.4FTE of your role to providing post-doctoral research assistance for Dr Kevin Linch's Arts and Humanities Council Leadership Fellowship 'Re-archiving the Individual: British Army Officers, 1790-1820' (Grant Reference: AH/W004267/1). This project will develop the practice of digitally re-arranging archive records around named individuals, using British Army officer records from c.1790-1830 as a case study. The project involves creating a life archive through a process of digitisation and record linking that will be developed in collaboration with the Sheffield Digital Humanities Institute (Sheffield DHI) and the UK's National Archive. These resources will then be used to explore the careers of Army officers, bridging themes of biography, social networks, agency, military effectiveness, and record keeping / state power in the period. The fellowship will create a public-facing database that includes advanced data query building and visualisation tools transforming our understanding of Army officers in the period. You will contribute to the delivery of academic outputs through presentations and publications as well as engaging with the archive sector to develop tools to evaluate collections for similar transformative projects in the future.
