Job Description:
The Medical Director of Microbiology provides leadership and direction to pathology services across the Marshfield Health Care System. Responsibilities include monitoring and input into overall departmental/service management including strategic planning, the employment of personnel, continuous process improvement, compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements, financial review and new service development. Applicants will also be asked to participate as content expert for the system Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committees, and as system laboratory spokesperson for infectious disease needs. The position will also include a part-time appointment as a Research Scientist within the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute (MCRI).
The individual will join a PhD clinical microbiologist, 2 clinical chemists, 19 anatomic and clinical pathologists and over 500 laboratory staff in delivering laboratory services to our 10 regional hospitals and 55 clinic locations located in north-central Wisconsin. Applicants will also be asked to participate as content expert for the system Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committees, and as system laboratory spokesperson for infectious disease needs. The position will also include a part-time appointment as a Research Scientist within the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute (MCRI).
The chosen individual will be responsible for all phases of technical leadership, training, quality assurance/quality control and regulatory compliance associated with both IVD and laboratory-developed testing. The individual will also be asked to serve as the CLIA laboratory medical director for one or more of our regional health-care entities with occasional travel expected. Appointment to the MCRI will involve participation or coordination in research opportunities that involve the clinical laboratories, and may include the development of translational diagnostic technologies in conjunction with MCRI Scientists that can then be offered through the clinical laboratories to assist in patient care.
Additional responsibilities will include clinical consultation, and occasional teaching of staff, medical technology students, medical students and residents. The individual will work closely with our other Clinical Microbiologist, Clinical Pathologists, Laboratory Administration and provider stakeholders in developing lab testing strategies that further the mission, vision and values of our healthcare system.
EDUCATION
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: MD or DO degree from accredited medical school with certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology or Clinical Pathology
Preferred/Optional: S ubspecialty certification in Medical Microbiology by the American Board of Pathology or by the American Board of Medical Microbiology
EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in laboratory medicine. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse physicians and medical staff groups
Preferred/Optional: Three years' experience as practicing pathologist in Microbiology/Molecular Pathology area
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required: Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology or Clinical Pathology and Board board eligible in Microbiology (American Board of Pathology/American Board of Medical Microbiology) . License to practice medicine in the State of Wisconsin
