The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture - together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). It also maintains a research station with further locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

We are offering at our location in Müncheberg a Tenure Track Position for a Scientist and future Working Group Leader (m/f/d) on Demand-Driven Innovations in the Agri-Food System [Reference N° T02-2022]

Call description

This Classic Tenure Track Call invites applications with an ambition to lead an internationally recognized research group on agri-food system analysis and transformation. Our research covers actor-driven spatial processes at the regional level. A particular focus is on-demand trends that integrate management and markets considering environmental, civic and cultural perspectives. We investigate transformative system innovations using a variety of integrated methods drawing from the natural, socio-ecological and economic sciences.

The successful candidate will have broad expertise in agri-food systems related research and be capable of leading colleagues from across disciplines and methodological approaches. Specifically, the candidate will:
  • conceptualize and investigate agri-food systems' transformation with a focus on the urban-rural interface within agricultural landscapes
  • assess the conditions and new system trajectories which align regional agri-food systems with societal demands. Potential methods may include foodshed, agent based and/or integrated socio-economic and biophysical modelling; and
  • undertake strategic fund-raising and initiate new collaborative and transdisciplinary research projects


The call is addressed to dynamic and highly motivated researchers with a PhD and postdoc experience in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, economics, sociology, geography, urban/regional planning, or related disciplines. As a prospective future working group leader, candidates should show commitment to team leadership, strategic agenda setting, and mentoring of early career researchers. Candidates have proven their leadership skills through leadership roles in national and international research. They have significant experience in empirical methods, as well as interest in coupling qualitative research results with quantitative analysis to advance systems understanding in support of systems transformation. Demonstrated experience in the use of analytical approaches (e.g. participatory and scenario methods, social network analysis, fuzzy cognitive mapping) in the context of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research is mandatory.Candidates must have international visibility in their respective field of research, an excellent publication record, successfully acquired competitive third-party funding, and experience in team and project management.

We offer

The successful candidate will receive a Regular Tenure Track position (2 x 2-3 years) / Fast Tenure Track position (1 x 2-3 years), with progress to the subsequent phase / to a permanent position subject to successful evaluation. If candidates are not legally eligible for two consecutive fixed-term contracts, they may enter the Fast Tenure Track if the required scientific achievements are fulfilled. For the prospective future working group leadership a transition phase with shared tasks is envisaged.

Tenure contracts are generally offered as full-time contracts, with a part-time option to allow for the reconciliation of family and career. Salary will follow the guidelines for public employees according to the German TV-L, depending on the personal qualification and agreed responsibilities up to the level of E14. The working place is in Müncheberg near Berlin, Germany. The successful candidate will be offered individual options for career support such as a mentoring tandem, courses and trainings as well as variable options to access scientific resources.
