RESEARCH ASSISTANT (BILINGUAL) - CENTER FOR NEURODEVELOPMENTAL AND IMAGING RESEARCH

Overview

The Research Assistant collaborates with the PIs and larger investigative team in reaching the research goals of the Healthy Brain Child Development (HBCD) Study. The Research Assistant will be responsible for duties including but not limited to: MRI data collection, quality control, and preprocessing; working as part of the larger research team which includes recruitment and retention specialists, neuropsychologists, and other imaging staff; and training undergraduate research assistants and interns to assist with these responsibilities.

Responsibilities

1. Coordinates with the participant recruitment and retention team to schedule MRI appointments.
2. Assists with administering MRI scans and mock scan training sessions, which will include activities meant to promote sleep in young children (feeding,swaddling, diaper changing, rocking/soothing a child).
3. Performs quality control, preprocessing, and analysis of MRI data.
4. Evaluates technical issues, troubleshooting and resolving conflicts during the setup of new experiments.
5. Manages archives of ongoing MRI study data. Archives unprocessed quantitative data, and generates and compiles statistical data.
6. Maintains clear, complete, and accurate records of data collection and analysis steps performed.
7. Assists in the development and documentation of research protocols.
8. Trains and oversees the work of undergraduate students assisting with all aspects of the research protocols.
9. Collaborates effectively with all members of the research team (both inside the lab and outside).
10. Receives cross-training on other aspects of the HBCD protocol as needed to support the overall goals and objectives of the larger multicomponent research initiative (e.g., behavioral assessments, EEG data acquisition).
11. Attends and participates in research activities involving, but not limited to, quality control issues, and protocol development or revision, and when necessary prepares and presents routine and incremental updates on relevant projects.
12. Enhances professional growth and development through case conferences, educational programs, in-service meetings, workshops, conferences, and seminars, including preparation of abstracts and manuscripts for publication.
13. Documents the results of ongoing studies, by providing text, tables and figures for scientific review, including submissions to conferences, peer-reviewed publications, and grants.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

• Bachelors degree in a science-related field (e.g., biology, neuroscience, psychology, biomedical engineering, computer science, or physics) required.

EXPERIENCE:

• Preferred
• Prior experience working with infants and/or young children in a research context.
• Experience working with women recovering from substance use disorder.
• Experience with at least one programming language, including MATLAB.
• Background in scientific research, familiar with skills including literature searches, planning of research projects, experimentation, interpretation of data, and preparation for publications.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.
• Individual must demonstrate competence in all aspects of data acquisition, management, and analysis and working as part of a research team.
• Individual must demonstrate competence and comfortability in working with infants and young children, and families from diverse backgrounds.
• Employee must be proficient with Microsoft Office products, such as Excel, Power Point, Word, and Access to help the laboratory meet presentation preparation and reporting goals.
• Expertise with set-up and trouble-shooting of technical equipment is preferred.
• Working knowledge in at least one statistical software (SPSS, R, or SAS) is preferred.
• Working knowledge of neuroimaging software is preferred (AFNI, FSL, or other relevant software package) is preferred.
