This NIHR funded Clinical Lectureship in Burns and Plastic Surgery will be based in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, University of Birmingham. The applicant must have some ST run-through training in Plastic Surgery and be eligible for or in receipt of a UK GRID higher specialist training post in Plastic Surgery subspecialty. Applicants must hold NTN (ST3 or above), and fully awarded PhD, MD or equivalent. The post has a 50:50 split between research and clinical training, with protected time for the academic element.

It is intended that their research will focus on laboratory and/or clinical aspects of research (including clinical trials) which can be accommodated within the College.

Main Duties

Clinical
The job plan for the Clinical Lecturer will be set up to protect 50% of the lecturer's time for academic purposes, including academic training, as well as providing maximal clinical experience and clinical learning opportunities. The post-holder will be expected to attend regional Plastic Surgery training days and will carry a recognised specialty training number.

Clinical Sessions will be mostly based Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the exact timetable will depend on the Plastic Surgery subspecialties to which the CL is attached within the West Midland region. An individual programme will be finalised according to the research and clinical training needs of the successful candidate as identified from regular reviews and formal assessments with both dedicated academic and educational supervisors.

Teaching

The CL is expected contributions to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes including MBChB, MSc trauma science courses. Teaching also include both bedside and formal teaching. Successful candidate would be expected to organise teaching webinars on regional, national, and international level.

There may be additional duties in helping with FY2 teaching and in the organization of training for specialist trainees. Additional modules such as personal interest projects could be offered according to the appointee's area of clinical research.

Research

The Clinical Lecturer will have a developing Burns and Plastic Surgery research portfolio and area of interest that is compatible with an established research group within the University of Birmingham. The Clinical Lecturer will be offered research facilities and support to help establish her/his research in Birmingham. She/he would be expected to work across the city with Birmingham Children Hospital and to align with the established Clinical Research Network, CRN. There will be strong encouragement in common with other research active staff in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences that the Clinical Lecturer should obtain funding for her/his research activities during lectureship.
The post will also offer an opportunity for career progression and taking a leadership role at Birmingham Burn Research centre.

Person Specification
  • Full General Medical Council registration
  • Higher degree (MD/PhD)
  • Membership of Royal College
  • Published in scientific journals
  • Presented at international scientific meetings
  • Experience in delivering bed side teaching, tutorials and lecturing to larger groups
  • Understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance in research.
  • Ability to work in teams
  • Demonstration of clinical and research leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate scientific findings to a lay audience and to engage with patient and public groups.
  • Firm Commitment to academic career in Burns and Plastic Surgery.


Essential Criteria
  • Must hold a current NTN (ST3 or above).
  • Must have a higher research degree (PhD, MD or equivalent) in a relevant subject area; all candidates must have submitted their final thesis to be eligible to apply and must have been fully awarded their higher degree in order to be able to take up the post.
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences or equivalent
  • Evidence of good progress in clinical training and that completion of specialty training* may be accommodated either during or after the 4 year period of the NIHR CL award (*not applicable to fully qualified GP candidates)

Desirable Criteria
  • Evidence of commitment to GMC specialty
  • Intercalated honours degree and/or additional qualifications e.g. MSc etc.
