This position is for a candidate from the Pacific Islands region, or of Pacific Islands descent, to undertake innovative research as part of the Regional Perspective Project. Please address this requirement as part of your application.

The Regional Perspectives project seeks to gain a greater understanding of perspectives from the Pacific Islands region on key issues related to security and stability, broadly defined, and framed within a local context. With funding from the Department of Defence, Science and Technology Group, the project aims to help Defence, and the broader Australian government, to better understand the Pacific Islands region, develop more sustainable and culturally sensitive engagement strategies, and play its part in creating a safer, fairer, more stable, and prosperous region. The UoA team is led by Professor Joanne Wallis from the School of Social Sciences, and will consist of two Pacific Research Fellows, two Pacific PhD Scholars, and local research partners in the Pacific Islands region.

The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to the project research, including by collaborating with local research partners in the Pacific Islands to co-design the research aims, methodology, and the communication of the project data. The researcher will also be invited to contribute to the supervision of the two Pacific PhD Scholars. There will be opportunities for the candidate to build their own research agenda, including through individual and collaborative publications, and to conduct funded fieldwork in the Pacific Islands, as well as travel to present at academic conferences and workshops.

To be successful you will need:
  • A PhD (or nearing completion of a PhD) in the Social Sciences (including, but not limited to, Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, Anthropology, and Geography).
  • Demonstrated capacity to conduct quality research about the Pacific Islands region and the ability to develop creative approaches to research design.
  • High-level understanding of the communication skills required in the Pacific Islands context.
  • Ability to thrive both when conducting independent research and while working collaboratively.
  • Understanding of the demands of applied research/consultancy work.
