The University of Utah College of Nursing ( CON ) seeks a full-time (1.0 FTE ) experienced Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner ( PMHNP ) to serve as a non-tenure line (i.e. clinical, lecturer, or research track) faculty member to serve as the Director of Behavioral Health (.2 FTE ) within the Faculty Practice Behavioral Health team and to teach in the undergraduate (BS) and/or the graduate (MS & DNP ) programs of study.

Job Summary:

The Clinical Director assists the Associate Dean for Faculty Practice and the College of Nursing by providing support and leadership as the CON Behavioral Health practice expands. The successful candidate will direct the operations and strategic planning of staff, customer/patient services, and financial management for 7 practitioners in 9 locations and act as a catalyst among departments, faculty, physicians and staff to ensure continuity and quality of service. The faculty member will also participate in clinical practice and teaching and other faculty responsibilities as negotiated.

Principle Director Functions and Responsibilities:

1. Work with the Associate Dean for Faculty Practice and department leaders on Health Sciences Initiatives, achieving quality goals, and managing and promoting continuous process improvements.

2. Produce and implement a staffing plan in coordination with department leaders.

3. Manage clinicians working in psychiatric sites of service both internal and in external locations with community partners.

4. Responsible for recruiting, hiring, onboarding, firing, disciplinary actions, check ins with clinicians and annual performance evaluations.

5. Coordinate with CON education leaders for student placements

6. Grow the tele-mental and behavioral health practice, including vetting new opportunities, developing business plans, reviewing contracts, reviewing clinical practice key performance indicators (KPI's) and hiring candidates.

7. Coordinate and conduct regular practice meetings to ensure team functioning, continuity of evidence-based practice and expectations while upholding PROMISE standards of team members.

8. Form collaborative relationships with the appropriate College Of Nursing stakeholders /leaders, School of Medicine leaders as well as community partners and stakeholders to support the mission, vision, values, and performance standards of the organization.

9. Identify areas of quality improvement for the practice(s) and develop initiatives to improve quality of care. This could also include developing, reviewing and revising practice policies or guidelines.

10. Meet the principle functions and major areas of responsibility as a working provider.

11. Provide staff feedback on performance, including on-time appraisals and coaching. Responsible to proactively and equitably manage conflict, reach resolution in a timely manner.

12. Inform staff regarding updates and news as well as involving staff in decisions and work teams. Provide feedback and recognition when appropriate.

13. Look for ways to increase services in our ambulatory practice settings: Transcranial magnetic stimulation ( TMS ) incorporating licensed counselors to be part of the team's practice, etc.

14. Some travel may be required.

15. Perform other duties as assigned

Principle Functions and Responsibilities of Faculty:

16. Specific programs and/or course assignments will depend upon the candidate's clinical background, qualifications, and certifications.

17. Additional faculty expectations include ongoing program development, curriculum development, college committee service, and professional activities/service.

18. Development of clinically focused scholarship is an expectation for long-term retention and advancement in rank.

Criteria for the Position:

1. Licensure to practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Doctoral preparation, Doctor of Nursing Practice degree preferred, with progressive management experience. Current Utah licensure with prescriptive authority and a DEA is required (or qualifications for such).

2. Five years of experience as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner ( PMHNP ). Dual certifications and / or additional degrees (e.g., MBA , MPH , and MHA ) are welcomed.

3. Excellent clinical skills, inclusive interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with patients and other members of the health care and academic team are essential.

4. Management and clinical precepting / teaching experience are desired.

5. Newly hired non-physician providers must apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.

6. This position is patient-sensitive. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

7. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in Principle Functions and Responsibilities and Skills and Abilities Requirements below.

8. Must be knowledgeable regarding the laws, rules and regulations that govern nurse practitioners in the state of Utah.

9. The position requires a considerable degree of independent skills and judgment necessary to monitor and respond to changes in regulations, practice environments and financial decisions.

10. The position will require knowledge about tele-mental health laws, rules, regulations, market forces that influence tele-mental health and the knowledge to sustain and grow a behavioral health practice - both in person and tele-mental health.

11. Engagement in clinical education as an educator is an expectation of the position.

12. The incumbent should be active in professional organizations.

13. This position will require someone with an entrepreneurial spirit as the practice has goals to expand.

14. Teaching experience, including student clinical supervision as well as classroom, online and/or simulation teaching, is preferred.

15. Applicants must be willing to reside in the state of Utah and work on-site at the College of Nursing.

Skills and Ability Requirements:

1. Considerable degree of independent skills and judgment necessary

2. Interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with patients and other members of health care team

3. Demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills.

4. Ability to determine the appropriate staff mixes to support patient and customer needs.

5. Knowledge of management practices, reporting analysis and forecasting.

Reporting Relationships:

Reports directly to the Associate Dean for Faculty Practice in this role.

Yearly evaluations per above requirements, functions and responsibilities will be conducted and will also be evaluated in accordance with the College of Nursing Retention and Review Statement for Career-Line and Emeritus Faculty.
