Position Description:
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for a Staff Scientist position in the Intramural Research Program (IRP), Social and Behavioral Research Branch (SBRB), Neurobehavioral Clinical Research Section (NCRS). NCRS research program examines the interplay of genomic and environmental factors in shaping the developmental trajectories of brain and behavior.
The program focuses on one of the most common and heritable childhood mental illnesses, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a highly heritable disorder, with an estimated 70 percent of the affected phenotype explained by genetic factors. Genomics, therefore, is at the core of understanding the disorder. The section has three main areas of research: 1) defining novel phenotypes pertinent to ADHD based in the neuroimaging, social and behavioral sciences, 2) identifying the genomic factors that contribute to the disorder, and 3) translating discoveries into tools for prognosis and into novel treatments.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in neuroscience, genomics, computational science or a closely related discipline, and a minimum of five years' research experience at a post-doctoral level. Essential skills include (1) ability to analyze longitudinal datasets (such as transcriptomic and epigenomic data); 2) skill in integrating genomic and neural data, including machine learning, and multivariate approaches; (3) publication record in studies involving neurodevelopmental disorders; (4) experience in scripting for novel methods; (5) experience in managed whole exome/genome data. Desired skills are (1) the ability to conduct meta-analyses of imaging/genomic data; (2) experience in study design. The candidate should have a strong publication record demonstrating the essential and desired skills. The Staff Scientist's primary responsibility will include will providing direction and leadership on research tasks, including study design, database management, and data analysis support for section projects, mentoring junior staff and collaborating with NHGRI and other investigators. The current salary range is commensurate with experience and accomplishments; a full civil service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan participation, etc.) is available.
