Job Summary:
Vir Bio is seeking an experienced medicinal chemist to join our innovative drug discovery efforts. The successful candidate will contribute to all phases of drug discovery and play a leading role in our medicinal chemistry efforts. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in both hit-to-lead and lead optimization strategies. The candidate should have a proven track record of leading medicinal chemistry teams with demonstrated success in small molecule drug discovery lead optimization.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and execute medicinal chemistry strategies to design, synthesize, and progress lead compounds
  • Direct internal and outsourced chemistry efforts
  • Use lead optimization expertise to drive progression of drug discovery projects
  • Advance drug discovery initiatives through cross functional collaborations with internal and external partners (including pharmacology, functional genomics, machine learning, and DMPK)
  • Provide strategic, scientific, and managerial leadership for junior chemists
  • Contribute to the overall scientific strategy and success of Vir Research

Qualifications:
  • PhD in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry with 4+ years industrial experience in medicinal chemistry
  • Strong proficiency in fundamental aspects of small molecule lead optimization and demonstrated ability to advance drug discovery projects
  • High level of creativity and productivity in chemical synthesis with strong synthetic problem-solving skills, synthetic methods, and reaction mechanisms
  • Breadth of experience collaborating and utilizing principles of DMPK, pharmacology, and structure-based drug design in lead optimization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively with Vir scientific leadership
