Summary

The Research Assistant I performs laboratory tests to support research efforts in biological research through a variety of scientific techniques, instrumentation, and disciplines by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Generates data from a variety of laboratory techniques, such as cell culture models, gene and protein isolation, PCR, ELISA, Flow Cytometry, histological methods, and microscopy.
  • Handles laboratory animals and performs tissue sectioning, organ harvesting, injections, and blood collection.
  • Participates in bioassay development through optimization of bioassays with concern for product purity, yield, and scalability, and communicates optimized process to quality assurance or manufacturing.
  • Calibrates and maintains analytical instrumentation.
  • Maintains laboratory notebooks, archives, and sample or specimen repository.
  • Trains laboratory researchers in lab safety, specific techniques, and equipment usage
  • Laboratory ordering and organization of supplies
  • Performs duties of laboratory safety officer
  • Assists fellow laboratory members with planning, designing, preparing, and executing experiments.

Required Experience:

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Research Assistant I will work closely with post-doctoral, visiting scientist, and student researchers in the lab in order to design, prepare, and execute experimental techniques.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (B.A.or B.S.) from four-year college or university; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read, write and speak English. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of peers and managers. Writes clearly and informatively; Edits work for spelling and grammar; Varies writing style to meet needs; Presents numerical data effectively; Able to read and interpret written information.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, dilutions, molarity, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software, Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software. Database and statistical analyses softwares are a plus, but not necessary.
