The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) fellow is a licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) who functions as a member of the health care team to provide high quality, comprehensive acute and/or routine medical/surgical care of Rush University Medical Center patients within the scope of practice granted in accordance with the RUMC medical staff bylaws. The APP fellow will work with preceptor guidance to ensure cost effective and quality patient care and to develop expertise in the specialty areas of mental and behavioral health.

The fellow will also spend dedicated time per week in educational sessions pertinent to their role as defined by the department fellowship director or department chairman. The experiences will include training in outpatient clinics as well as child psychiatry community settings and specialty substance use services. The individual who holds this position will exemplify the Rush mission, vision and values and act in accordance with the policies, procedures, guidelines of Rush, including the Rush University Medical Group Customer Service standards. Successful candidates will also meet all other state and federal regulatory practice and accreditation standards. Position Responsibilities:

Clinical
Completes and documents an accurate history and physical examination of patients.
Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develops patient care plans.
Orders and interprets tests, treatments, and therapies within the scope of practice.
Prescribes medications, including controlled substances to the extent delegated including non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
Orders, interprets, and performs laboratory and other diagnostic tests and procedures.
Provides clear, concise, and accurate information in the electronic medical record.
Initiate and perform consultations in accordance with Rush rules and regulations.
Make appropriate referrals to other health care professionals and/or agencies.
Provides direct patient care in assigned areas, which may be in a hospital or ambulatory setting.

Professional
Works collaboratively with his/her collaborating physician, department, fellowship program director and other members of the healthcare team in an effective and comprehensive manner.
Acts as an advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the physician assistant profession
Assimilates didactic and clinical training and evaluation into expertise in practice
Integrates evidence based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making
Demonstrates competency in all medical and surgical procedures and skill considered essential in their area of practice
Maintains board certification, state licensure, and continuing medical education as outlined by hospital, state, and federal policy.

Leadership
Supports the organization's overall strategic plan and direction.
Serves as an emerging leader of the healthcare team to provide integrated delivery of patient care services
Actively participates in ongoing and systematic quality improvement efforts which focus on patient care delivery and supports processes that provide optimal patient outcomes.
Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice and improvement. Including ongoing self-assessment of core competencies and yearly goals.
Develops and leads implementation of department goals by collaborating with department staff, students, and physicians.
Serves as a role model and thought leader for their own profession including practice analysis and advancement to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Manages resources effectively thereby considering the institution and practice's fiscal responsibilities.
Demonstrates an understanding of patient documentation, compliance, and billing best practices

Education
Provides relevant and comprehensive patient education to patients, families and significant others.
Attends all didactic and clinical components of the fellowship program
Takes initiative to learn independently
Utilizes educational sessions for growth and development.
Continuously assesses their personal capabilities and limitations, striving always to approve their medical practice.
Use their knowledge and expertise to contribute to an improved community.

Position Requirements

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Requirements
Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Licensure
Current Nurse Practitioner Certification from a national certifying organization approved Master's or Doctorate degree in nursing
The APRN's education and specialty board certification must correlate with the APP's job role, setting, responsibility and patient population.
BLS certification.

Physician Assistant (PA) Requirements
Current State of Illinois Physician Assistant Licensure.
Current Certification from National Certification Commission for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
Degree from an ARC-PA (or predecessor) accredited PA Program required; Master's degree preferred.
BLS certification

Skills/Abilities:
Demonstrates competency in all areas of APP practice including: medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, patient care, professionalism, practice based learning and improvement, and systems based practice.
Skill in preparing and maintaining electronic and paper medical records
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in area of expertise.
Strong work ethic, interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with collaborating physician, department, and other members of the healthcare team in an effective and comprehensive manner.
