Job Summary
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Division of Genetics and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology.
The Division Director plans and directs a program of research grants, analyzes national research efforts related to the scientific areas supported by the Division, and makes recommendations to assist the NIGMS Director and the National Advisory General Medical Sciences Council or other advisory committees or groups. The Director identifies the research needs in the areas of genetics and molecular, cellular and developmental biology, and advises other government agencies, universities and research institutes, and professional and lay organizations about research opportunities, needs, and requirements. The GMCDB Division Director also works with other Institute components to advance NIGMS' mission, including through support of its training, workforce development, and diversity and research capacity building goals.
This position offers important opportunities to set scientific priorities, lead change and improve the research enterprise.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must possess an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree in a field relevant to the position. The ideal candidate will have considerable research and/or research administration experience and knowledge related to the NIGMS mission. In addition, candidates should possess recognized research management and leadership abilities. The position will be filled under a Title 42 (f) excepted service appointment.
