The role

The lecturer will be based in the Department of Translational Health Sciences, a cross-disciplinary teaching and laboratory environment that encourage collaboration between vibrant groups. This role requires the post holder to devote 0.5FTE for teaching and 0.5FTE for research activities.

The lecturer will make a significant contribution to the Bristol Medical School teaching, predominantly by playing a major role in the leadership, management and delivery of our taught postgraduate MSc (https://www.bristol.ac.uk/medical-school/study/postgraduate/) and undergraduate programmes .

The post holder will also establish and lead an independent Bioinformatic research programme and support research activities across the School. Their research will be supported by Bristol's facilities including proteomics, genomics, imaging, and in vivo work. Tailored support towards career development of the post holder will be provided through line management and mentorship.

What will you be doing?
  • Play a key role in our taught postgraduate MSc (https://www.bristol.ac.uk/medical-school/study/postgraduate/) and undergraduate programmes through acting as unit lead for at least two 20 credit units in this programme and supervising research projects.
  • Inspire students and enhance their career opportunities through innovative and research-led teaching, mentoring and personal tutoring.
  • Develop and maintain an internationally competitive research programme in Bioinformatics research and play a key role in supporting Bioinformatics across the School.
  • Establish a research group by recruiting, supervising and training PhD students, post-doctoral researchers.
  • Publish influential research outcomes in peer-reviewed international high-impact scientific journals.
  • Ensure the sustainability of your research activities by securing significant research funding.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Bristol Medical School and the wider Bristol to facilitate high-quality research.
  • Collaborate with public and private enterprises to enhance intellectual property development where appropriate, leading to potential income opportunities.
  • Perform administrative and managerial duties as agreed with the Head of School/Head of Department.


You should apply if
  • You are a Bioinformatician with a desire to carry out and support high quality translational health research.
  • You are a research fellow, postdoctoral researcher or lecturer with extensive Bioinformatic research and teaching experience.
  • You are passionate about research-led teaching and are an innovative teacher with experience of teaching roles on undergraduate and/or postgraduate taught programmes as well as supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate taught project students and postgraduate research students.
  • You have experience of teaching online for distance learning programmes.
  • You have a keen interest in translating your Bioinformatic research to understanding disease pathology.
  • You have a growing or established reputation of producing internationally recognised research in Bioinformatics which complements Bristol's existing research portfolio.
  • You have experience in publishing research and review articles in well-respected international journals.
  • You have experience of helping to secure or securing significant external funding to maintain the sustainability of research programmes.
  • You are great at building strong, effective relationships with people from different teams and sectors to enable collaborative research and teaching
