LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Teaching in and coordinating the following modules offered by the Department of Public Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, which involve taking a contextual and transformative approach:
    • Constitutional Law;
    • Human Rights Law;
    • Socio-Economic Rights.
  • Conducting academic scholarly research;
  • Engaging with the community through teaching, supervision and research that is embedded in and responsive to the African and South African social context;
  • Having an in-depth understanding of own area of specialisation to enable development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field;
  • Supervising masters and doctoral students;
  • Mentoring students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Academic administration and management;
  • Performing other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:
  • LLM (preferably by full dissertation) in the discipline of Constitutional Law or related areas in law;
  • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching;
  • Relevant tertiary teaching experience;
  • At least two accredited publications in the last three years.

Senior Lecturer:
  • LLD / PhD degree in one of the abovementioned fields or related fields;
  • At least five years' tertiary teaching experience;
  • At least eight accredited publications in peer-reviewed journals of which three should have been published in the three years preceding the year of application;
  • Conference papers delivered;
  • Evidence of successful supervision of at least two research master's degrees or four coursework master's mini-dissertations will be a strong recommendation;
  • Evidence of community engagement;
  • Proven record of academic administration and academic citizenship.

Associate Professor (Same as for Senior Lecturer, plus):
  • At least eight years' teaching experience, including curriculum development, at a tertiary education institution;
  • Experience in curriculum development;
  • At least 16 accredited publications in peer-reviewed journals or chapters in scholarly books;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision: four research master's or six coursework master's mini dissertations will be strong recommendations, as will be evidence of completed successful doctoral supervision or co-supervision;
  • An appropriate NRF rating or identified by peers as an independent established researcher, at least at a national level.

Professor (Same as for Associate Professor, plus):
  • At least ten years teaching experience, including curriculum development, at a tertiary education institution;
  • At least 30 accredited publications in peer-reviewed journals or chapters in scholarly books;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision: six research master's or 10 coursework master's mini dissertations, or at least two completed successful doctoral supervisions;
  • An appropriate NRF rating or identified by peers as an independent established researcher with international recognition;
  • Active memberships of academic relevant local and international subject-related bodies, where applicable;
  • Conference papers delivered internationally.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Experience in national and international academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Ability to plan independently and initiate discipline-related research;
  • An established network of collaborative researchers.
  • Ability to prepare proposals and submissions to external bodies for funding and accreditation purposes;


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor / Professor:
  • Demonstrable subject expertise and interest in the following areas related to public law:
    • Administrative Law;
    • Legal Interpretation.
  • Some experience in online teaching and learning


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
