Position Summary:

The Associate CIO - Research Computing will provide leadership in advancing NJITs research by architecting platforms that fuel strategic research growth at this premier technology institute. A researcher at heart, with deep expertise in networking, advanced research computing, and data sciences, this individual will envision the next-generation of research computing at NJIT by fostering collaboration across NJITs diverse technology research faculty. This position will lead engagement and outreach with the universitys research faculty, expand collaboration with national and international research organizations, and ensure outstanding service to the universitys research faculty. The position will build a team to manage the infrastructure, provide training, and related services to create an enabling experience for the universitys research faculty. The Associate Vice Provost of Research Computing will lead the successful journey of modernizing legacy platforms leveraging cloud, enhance governance and decision making, and establish predictable and consistent services to the universitys research community. All duties will need to be performed in accordance with university policies, procedures and core values.

Essential Functions:

Provide strategic leadership towards developing NJITs research computing and cyberinfrastructure strategy, in collaboration with the universitys research community, the CIO, and the Sr Vice Provost for Research .

Envision and architect the next-generation strategic research computing infrastructure, leveraging key partnerships with vendors and external organizations.

Build and sustain a high performing team enhancing research computing infrastructure and adopt a service management model to provide full range of technology services to NJITs research community.

Strengthen research infrastructure systems by developing appropriate policies, and ensuring architecture, standards and methods are documented and followed.

Institute appropriate controls and security measures that manage the universitys data. Ensures appropriate policies and procedures are created and in place.

Institute proactive capacity planning to improve overall performance for all relevant services.

Ensures successful functioning and operations of research computing infrastructure and related applications, transparently sharing key performance metrics such as availability, time to complete projects, mean time to resolve open issues, aging tickets, and campus partner satisfaction.

Strengthen collaboration across Information Services and Technology division, with campus partners, with vendors, and with national and global entities to facilitate shared opportunities while leveraging efficiencies.

Participate as a key member as part of the Information Services and Technology divisions leadership team collaborating on strategies that benefit the division and the campus.

Engage regularly with researchers and leadership within the academic community on topics and issues related to advanced research computing.

Perform other duties as assigned and as needed, including readiness to support after hours and weekends.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in any Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics field or equivalent experience with computing-intensive and/or data-intensive research computing.

12+ years of progressive experience at a research intensive facility, managing research technology strategy with researchers, faculty, and/or industry collaborators.

10+ years of experience architecting and instituting High Performance Computing, grid computing, cloud computing, research data storage, and research data management solutions.

5+ years of progressive experience leading research related services utilizing standard service engagement techniques and practices.

Demonstrated track record of conducting research, applying scientific methods, and formulating proposals.

Demonstrated experience envisioning and building collaborations with researchers across multiple disciplines and with vendors, participating in the development of NSF and similar grants.

Demonstrated ability to design governance and engagement strategies for effective decision making and collaboration in complex organizations.

A strong understanding of business and technical aspects of information technology at an academic and research intensive university.

Demonstrated knowledge of emerging technologies, best practices, and relevant regulatory requirements.

Demonstrated ability to act on tactical opportunities in an evolving, fast-paced environment, while continuing to build long term strategies.

Demonstrated ability to influence the campus to consider strategic technology, influence and motivate direct team, campus partners, and vendors through communication and engaging strategies.

At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience building and leading teams, and retaining staff in todays competitive tech landscape.

A Master's Degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field is preferred.

Experience as Program Director, PI on grants, research publications.
