Position Summary:

A position is available to work on fundamental questions in cellular neuroscience using the Drosophila genetic model system. The Research Assistant will assist in the investigation of mechanisms involved in neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity. Our laboratory is well equipped and highly interactive, and the successful applicant will be expected to help maintain laboratory operations. The candidate will also have the opportunity to learn cutting-edge imaging techniques. Independent thinking and problem solving skills are valued.

Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Husbandry of fly stocks.
  • Preparation of nerve and muscle tissue through micro-dissection procedures and the selective application of fluorescent chemical compounds.
  • Application of high speed fluorescence imaging techniques to live nerve terminals in situ.
  • Analysis of imaging data. Interpretation, communication and discussion of experimental findings. Reference to published data.
  • Perform other related duties and complete special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in either the life sciences with a minor in physics and/or mathematics, or a degree in mathematics, physics or engineering with classes completed in life sciences. Additionally, previous experience in a laboratory setting, e.g., exposure to experimentation in biological systems. A proficiency in personal computer use is expected.
