What You'll Do

Under the supervision of the administrator, and under the direction of the school nurse assist in the delivery of basic health care and emergency treatment for students attending Heartwood School.

Assist the school nurse in determining medical needs of all enrolled students via communications with parents, home supervisors, family physician and other medical specialists.
Assist the school nurse in providing school staff with general medical information and specific health concerns for each student.
Coordinates all vision, hearing, dental and other health related screenings done at the school.
Takes, records and monitors students' vital signs and records treatment in student record system.
Communicates with other medical or health related agencies to obtain necessary services or information for students.
Under the direction of the school nurse, stores and dispenses prescribed medication to students as necessary and arranges with parents for the supply and replenishment required for each student.
Assists the school nurse in providing for emergency medical treatment when necessary and communicates with parent(s)/home supervisors regarding related circumstances.
Assists in the learning process by providing students with basic instruction in health-related objectives.
Maintains records of the required immunizations for all students and advises parents when additional immunizations are needed.
Assists in the examination of students referred for suspected physical abuse and informs school administrator of conditions.
Attends school staff meetings and IEPC meetings for specified students.
Becomes familiar with and abides by established personnel procedures and building policies.
Assumes the majority of the school nurse functions when the school nurse is absent.
Assumes such other duties as may be assigned by the program administrator.

What You'll Bring

Need to Have

Minimum of an Associate degree or a certificate from a practical nursing education program.
Minimum of a Valid Michigan Practical Nurse License.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in written form.
Experience with severely physically or mentally impaired children is desired.
Ability to work independently under the direction of the Heartwood school nurse.
Ability to use critical thinking skills to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate plan of care or intervention under the direction of the Heartwood school nurse.
Ability to be self-directed, autonomous, flexible, organized, and to prioritize.
Ability to set and meet deadlines.
