Chair, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Wexner Medical Center seek an exceptional academic physician with proven leadership skills to serve as the next Chair for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) has been a leading center for more than 50 years. This year, U.S. News & World Report ranked our department #1 in Columbus and #31 in the nation for delivering exceptional patient care. Newsweek ranked Ohio State Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital as #1 in Ohio. We are one of only five centers in the nation chosen to participate in the NeuroRecovery Network, which uses activity-based therapies for spinal cord injury rehabilitation. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's rehabilitation program was the 1st in Ohio, 2nd in the nation, 3rd in the world, to be awarded CARF accreditation for our inpatient cancer rehabilitation program. The PM&R Department is part of Ohio State's multidisciplinary Neurological Institute, a network of specialists collaborating in clinical care, research, education and training.

The Department's faculty includes 27 board-certified PM&R physicians, 12 psychologists (8 with board certification in Rehabilitation Psychology and/or Clinical Neuropsychology), two advanced practice providers and 26 support staff. Our physicians have subspecialty board certification in Brain Injury Medicine, Spinal Cord Injury, Pain Medicine, Pediatrics, Sports Medicine, Palliative Care, Addiction Medicine, and Electrodiagnostics. We are a leader in clinical applications of rehabilitative care for diverse neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, including stroke, acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, cancer, chronic pain, sports medicine, orthobiologics, amputee care, and assistive technology.

Ohio State PM&R is internationally recognized for advanced clinical and basic science research in brain and spinal cord injury, bone health, neurophysiology, and orthobiologics. Our researchers have developed life-changing technologies such as Neurobridge - a brain implant that restored hand movement in a man with quadriplegia. Since 1997, we have been funded by the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation as a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model Systems site. In October 2021, three of our researchers were awarded a multi-site, multi-PI NIH grant totaling $16M that is expected to span the next seven years and substantially expand the capacity to use the EMR to conduct comparative effectiveness studies on rehabilitation interventions. The Department currently employs nine research staff.

Community engagement is also critical to fulfilling the department mission. The Department's Ohio Valley Center for Brain Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation engages the TBI community in the conduct of research, provides education and develops programs to improve the quality of life of persons who experience TBI. The center serves individuals, families and professionals throughout North America, both as a TBI Model System and as the designated lead agency for the Ohio Brain Injury Program and the Star Behavioral Health Providers Program. The PM&R faculty have also been leaders in supporting community adaptive sports activities for children and adults with disabilities. The PM&R Sports Medicine faculty are involved in local athletic teams at the high school and collegiate level.

Qualified candidates must possess an MD, DO or MD/PhD (or equivalent), board certification in PM&R, and be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the state of Ohio. Proven and substantive leadership experience in an academic medical center is required, as is the ability to be a collaborative thought-leader in a large, matrixed, multi-faceted medical center.
