This position exists within the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC), a research program of the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology (DMICE), an academic unit in the School of Medicine within OHSU. The EPC is a collaboration of OHSU, the University of Washington, and Aggregate Analytics, Inc., a small woman-owned business. The EPC receives funding from federal and non-federal sources to conduct systematic evidence reviews, meta-analyses, and original research in clinical epidemiology and participates in educational and clinical research training at OHSU. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded OHSU sequential 5-year, multi-million dollar contracts since 1997 to serve as an EPC, and AHRQ provides the largest share of funding to the EPC.

Function/Duties of Position

The Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology is seeking a faculty member with demonstrated experience conducting and leading systematic reviews to Co-direct the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC). As an essential member of EPC leadership, the appointee will work closely with the EPC Director and Program Manager, in accordance with the AHRQ program requirements, to lead the research endeavors of the center, providing administrative and scientific oversight of the EPC; mentoring junior faculty, supervising the Program Manager and directing and providing strategic oversight of the EPC. The appointee will be expected to foster an independent research career that builds valuable new knowledge in systematic review methodology and comparative effectiveness research and that guides evidence-based practice.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center, an active and well-established research program in systematic reviews and related methodologies.
  • Oversee and conduct EPC research in systematic review, leading design, methods and analysis, and publications.
  • Direct EPC administrative duties including strategic planning, preparing funding proposals, planning for adequate funding to maintain EPC faculty and staff, managing budgets and supervising the activities of the program manager.
  • Participate in AHRQ-required meetings, special interest methods and dissemination projects, and act as an Associate Editor for the National EPC program.
  • Act as liaison to governmental and non-governmental organizations to establish and sustain strong relationships and negotiate deliverables and timelines.
  • Collaborate on evidence reviews and other evidence-based research, including funding proposals, with faculty within DMICE, OHSU, the Pacific Northwest EPC partners, and externally.
  • Mentor Junior EPC Investigators ensuring scientific rigor, methodology, and integrity.
  • Teach and mentor EPC fellows and students in evidence-based medicine research including providing lectures, advising students, and providing opportunities for their participation in EPC projects as appropriate.
  • Participate in departmental administrative and management activities.
  • Participate in a limited clinical practice in OHSU clinics based on expertise (if applicable).
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D., D.O., PsyD. or similar
  • Extensive experience conducting systemic reviews in the scientific community and in an academic environment
  • Extensive experience collaborating with federal, state and non-governmental agencies in the conduct of research with rapid turnaround of deliverables
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary research teams
  • Experience working in close partnership with project sponsors, in the design and conduct of systematic reviews funded by government and non-governmental contracts involving multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong interpersonal skills, including and the ability to interact well with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated history of publications using appropriate methodology in high impact peer-reviewed academic journals
