The Stowers Institute's Electron and Light Microscopy Technology Center is looking for an experienced light microscopist to support the imaging needs of the Institute's 17 Principal Investigator labs. The Stowers Institute's wide range of model organisms and well-equipped facilities offer applicants exciting opportunities to collaborate with our research labs employing imaging and analysis modalities in novel ways.

As a Scientist I, your primary role would be to collaborate with members of the Stowers PI labs to advance scientific research and discovery through light microscopy and image analysis. You will test imaging techniques with the lab member, develop optimal experimental designs for answering their questions, train or assist them in the performing of experiments, and support the imaging analysis and preparation of results. In addition, you will adapt or develop new imaging or analysis techniques as necessary.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Collaborating with Stowers PI lab members to perform experimental design, image acquisition, image analysis and figure preparation
  • Assisting or training researchers to perform sample preparation, confocal imaging, and advanced imaging experiments
  • Staying abreast of trends in microscopy through literature, conferences, and workshops
  • Aiding in developing courses and workshops for the Institute's trainees
  • Troubleshooting/servicing microscopes as necessary and working with external vendors to find solutions to problems

Minimum Requirements:
  • A PhD in Biophysics, Bio-engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or related field, or 8+ years' microscopy experience and:
  • Extensive experience with advanced imaging techniques such as spectral unmixing, FRET, FRAP, SIM, 2PE, FLIM, FCS, STED or laser ablation
  • Extensive experience with current analysis/programming platforms such as Python, ImageJ, napari, Imaris, or Amira
  • Extensive experience with data visualization and figure preparation toolsets such as pandas, R, Graphpad, Photoshop, or Illustrator
  • A strong publication record in developing microscopy methods or in applying microscopy to perform biological discovery
  • Strong communication/presentation skills

Our Technology Center consists of 13 staff from a variety of backgrounds and a large suite of instruments including: a robot equipped CSU W1 spinning disk, a Zeiss 780 with 2PE/ablation, an Olympus VSI slide scanner, a Zeiss PALM micro-dissection system, a FRAP equipped CSU W1 spinning disk, a Leica SP8 STED with lifetime, a light sheet system, Zeiss 700/800 point scanners, a Perkin Elmer Opera Phenix HCS system, and a DeltaVision OMX super-resolution system
