JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago seeks a Research Associate to join our Health Care Programs Research Department to work on the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS), a nationwide health survey funded by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This position requires basic knowledge of the principles, processes, and practices of survey research through study and/or experience and is responsible for assisting with all aspects of survey research projects including a primary focus on the maintenance of technical documentation, data collection, and analysis of operational measures.

Preferably applicants will be based in our downtown Chicago, IL office.

DEPARTMENT: Health Care Programs

NORC's expertise and ongoing work in health care delivery and financing - including access to insurance, payment and delivery-system reform, benefit design, and quality measurement - advance stakeholders' understanding of policies and programs, facilitate implementation, and contribute to important improvements in cost and quality.

NORC's expert staff has extensive knowledge of all aspects of health care delivery, from private marketplaces and employer-sponsored insurance to Medicare and Medicaid; from large health care systems to small clinics; and from the needs of children to those of older adults, people with disabilities, and ethnic and racial minorities. Our expert team includes social scientists that acquire, collect, and analyze data from health care organizations and patients; evaluators; health services researchers; health-policy analysts; and professionals with first-hand experience running and supporting health care programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Review, develop and maintain technical documentation, including questionnaire specifications, flow charts and data dictionaries.
Conduct in-depth review of survey documentation to identify sources of error and potential solutions.
Conduct analyses and prepare communications with the ability to summarize findings within tables, graphs, and text that targets different audiences including leadership, IT programmers, operations team members, research staff and clients.
Conduct testing of questionnaires to ensure usability and functionality.
Investigate technical questionnaire issues to support use by field interviewers and data users.
Take notes at meetings and prepare initial draft of minutes; take notes at telephone/in-person interviews.
Develop project materials, such as report outlines, visual exhibits for reports, and serving as an editor for deliverables.
Assist with other aspects of survey research projects primarily focused on the maintenance of technical documentation, analysis of operational measures, and data collection.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Bachelors' Degree in the social sciences or related field
Experience with complex or relational databases a plus
Experience in a social science research environment (including internships)
Must have effective verbal and written communication skills
Must have strong organizational skills, attentiveness to detail, and ability to multi-task
Comfort working with multiple, large files and different sources of documentation
Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize assigned tasks and understand potential implications of late or incomplete work
Must be able to effectively work assigned tasks both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
