Job Description
Oil and gas and heavy industry are facing a complete transformation. After a century in which oil and gas have been society's main energy source, the world is now moving on to other primary energy sources. This transition places companies in tough dilemmas and choices. Industry needs to be agile and invest in new assets to prepare for the energy business of the future, at times taking major risk on radically new technologies, all the while trying to maintain existing assets.

Lux Research is seeking a curious, bright, open, and hard-working Research Associate to bring thought leadership to a talented team. Our clients include multi-national energy, materials, and chemicals companies in addition to investor, academic, and government groups.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts that can support their understanding of industry at both the systems and component level; they should also have a keen understanding of the broader disruptive trends in the energy transition - familiarity with developments in policy, regulation, new technology, and the interaction between these factors is an advantage.

You will write, develop, manage, and motivate research reports and analyses that help Lux clients make better decisions about investments, partnerships, and technology strategy. This responsibility also includes understanding regulatory processes as well as technology that can help to convert current assets to renewable energy. You will also advise clients on topics related to your research, present research at conferences, and speak with startups, universities, and established companies that are developing cutting-edge technologies. The ideal candidate has strong writing skills, is self-motivated, and is a strong generalist that can take on new areas quickly and is comfortable moving from topic to topic.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with a geographically diverse team to develop and test research hypotheses and prepare findings for clients
  • Conduct primary research with startups and other technology innovators and write reviews which critically examine their technology merits and business models
  • Conduct secondary research drawing on diverse sources, including business and trade press, academic publications, investments, patent filings, and conference presentations
  • Directly support and advise innovation clients, leveraging research from across the team - on phone and in person
  • Working with the Energy Transition team, help craft coverage priorities and a research agenda over the course of the year
  • Produce and manage written research reports
  • Represent Lux Research as a speaker at technology conferences
  • Understand client business needs to develop and deliver high-value research

Requirements:
  • This opening is an entry level position; undergraduate degree or equivalent experience with 2 years of related industry experience OR MSc in a related technical field with no industry experience - preference for chemical or mechanical engineering with strong understanding of thermodynamics and thermal conversion. A minor in policy or corporate governance is an advantage.
  • Ability to write clearly and incisively about business and technical topics
  • Mental flexibility and agility to quickly grasp multiple topics
  • A strong record of academic achievement
  • Deep intellectual curiosity about emerging technologies and ability to workshop and surface clear ideas with thought partners
  • Willingness to go the extra mile to meet client needs in a fast-moving, rapidly growing, environment
  • Entrepreneurial, enthusiastic, collegial, and collaborative approach to work
  • High degree of organization and attention to detail; ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Superior listening and critical thinking skills; ability to speak articulately and think on your feet; a good sense of humor is a major plus
  • Strong analytical skill, both qualitative and quantitative
