Job Description

The Associate Dean, Curriculum Evaluation and Effectiveness in the School of Applied Computational Sciences (SACS) will serve as a member of the SACS Administrative Leadership Council and will assist the Dean with facilitating a culture of assessment and evidenced-based decision-making to improve the teaching and learning processes, aid in strategic planning, meet all accreditation criteria, and help the institution make informed resource allocation and policy decisions. The Associate Dean will promote School-wide student learning outcomes and programmatic assessments that will inform and enhance academic and student affairs decision making and promote ongoing quality improvement. The Associate Dean will also assume a faculty role in SACS.

• Maintain knowledge of accreditation processes, procedures, and expectations relevant to the School.
• Work closely with the Dean, administrative leadership council, and faculty across the School to further develop strategies and programs that will position the School as a leader in the field of computational sciences.
• Represent the dean on various academic and administrative committees.
• Serve on campus-wide academic or administrative committees that deal with curriculum evaluation and institutional effectiveness policies.
• Participate on campus and community events.
• Build relationships among faculty and staff to develop and sustain a culture of assessment and evidence-based decision making.
• Collaborate with SACS academic chairs, faculty, dean, and other academic leadership members to write, submit, and lead substantive change proposals submitted to accrediting bodies including SACSCOC.
• Work with appropriate student affairs personnel to incorporate assessment findings for programmatic improvement.
• Plan and coordinate the self-study for accreditation; and write all accreditation reports as required by SACSCOC and other accrediting bodies that may apply to the School's academic programming.
• Attend relevant educational programming events, conferences, and meetings.
• Organize, coordinate and monitor on-going implementation of the School's accreditation agendas and SACSCOC (and other relevant accrediting agencies) recommendations.
• Articulate relevant accreditation activities from Commission Action documents and provide accreditation progress reports to the School.
• Maintain and implement a comprehensive School assessment plan that assesses departmental and program learning outcomes.
• Implement best practices for assessment and evaluation that are in alignment with institutional initiatives for continuous improvement and data governance.
• Produce annual reports of survey data (Student Experience Survey, etc.).
• Manage the annual academic review process by providing training to faculty to develop goals, outcomes, metric, data collection and analysis related to program effectiveness.
• Evaluate policies, procedures, and current practices that are relevant at the institutional level for the purpose of ensuring that SACS academic programs and services effectively meet faculty needs.
• Ensure alignment of institutional, program, and course-level learning outcomes.
• Implement strategies to use assessment results to make continuous improvements in student learning.
• Develop and maintain dashboards used to monitor indicators of success defined in the SACS Strategic Plan.
• Develop instructional methods that will reflect best practices in pedagogy
• Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students
• Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues
• Keep abreast of development in your field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences
• Develop and deploy impactful and socially-responsible scientific knowledge and practical technologies that empower society to improve the quality of life

Required Skills

• Extensive knowledge of higher education academic issues.
• Experience with and knowledge of SACSCOC policies.
• Extensive university-level graduate program curriculum development, learning outcome assessment and analysis.
• Experience with developing, interpreting, and applying policy.
• Experience working collaboratively in a shared governance environment.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to address different audiences within and outside the Meharry.
• Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of leadership or management.
• Ability to manage curriculum development that involves faculty reviewers.
• Strong proofreading and editing skills.
• Ability to adapt quickly and respond to changing assignments and multiple projects in a rapidly changing environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and professional etiquette to facilitate good working relationships with various audiences on campus, including all levels of administration, staff, as well as faculty and administrators.
• Strong computer skills, including the ability to develop documents, dashboards, spreadsheets, charts, graphs, tables, presentations, and web pages.
• Ability to attend to details to ensure the accuracy of information to be conveyed.
• Record of applying sound judgment and working within policy and protocol.
• Demonstrated ability to keep institutional confidences and carry out operations requiring diplomacy and tact.

Required Experience

• Earned doctorate degree in the natural sciences, computational sciences, statistics, clinical research, a technical and quantitative discipline with a focus on educational or psychological measurement, or in a field related to institutional effectiveness and student success research and planning.
• Candidates must have attained the academic rank of Professor, with at least 10 years of experience working in higher education.
• Extensive previous experience in assessment development and delivery preferably in academic/medical institutions.
• Knowledge and expertise in advanced statistical and computer applications in educational assessment.
