Professor in Astronautics and Spacecraft Engineering

You will join a very friendly and collaborative department, school and faculty with inter-disciplinary research interests across all areas of Aeronautics and Astronautics where fundamental and industrially relevant problems are addressed with theoretical, experimental, and computational methods. The Department is part of the School of Engineering where complementary work in aerodynamics and propulsion, battery technologies, autonomous aerial and underwater vehicles, computational engineering and design, mechatronics, materials science, and additive manufacturing are carried out. The school has recently made major investments in new experimental facilities across different departments in experimental aerodynamics, propulsion, structural mechanics, material science and additive manufacturing. The University is also home to the Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Hub, which is a cross-faculty initiative based in School of Electronics and Computer Science.

The department has a strong Astronautics research group and there are University-wide initiatives to promote space-related activities. This could be a great opportunity to add to your current research portfolio and/or expand your space-related research and teaching activities. We are particularly interested in candidates with research and teaching interests/experience in the following areas:
  • Guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of space systems
  • Close-proximity operations such as in-orbit servicing, in-space manufacturing, and active debris removal
  • Autonomous operation of spacecraft and constellations, including ground segment, and rovers
  • Space systems design, optimisation, and integration
  • Space-travel and habitation including in-space resource utilisation
  • Machine learning and/or data-driven methods for space and space data analysis

You must include a research statement, a teaching and citizenship (service) statement highlighting areas of interest in education as well as willingness to contribute to departmental leadership and a diversity statement addressing your commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusivity. You can enter these statements in the textboxes provided in the online application form. Alternately, upload documents (no more than 1 page per statement) and provide a summary of these statements in the textboxes. All three statements are required for your application to be considered. As part of these statements, candidates should evidence:
  • research interests/plans (including grant capture)
  • past research activities demonstrated by journal publications and funding portfolio
  • ability to develop/deliver modules with innovative teaching and assessment approaches
  • that they are caring and can support students (UG/PG) and colleagues
  • that they can work well in a diverse team and can build an inclusive department
  • that they can lead activities at a university/national level including our new space-related initiatives
