The George B. Delaplaine Jr. School of Business invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank in finance to begin in the fall semester of 2022. Visiting appointments will also be considered. An evolution of the college's longest standing department (Economics and Business Administration), the School of Business was named in 2018 after local philanthropist and social entrepreneur, George Delaplaine. The School offers programs at the Bachelors, Master's and Doctoral levels and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the premier accreditor of business schools that focus primarily on teaching and learning.The major in finance is the newest addition to the School's academic portfolio and reflects growing interest in the field both regionally and nationally. The assistant professor of finance will join a dynamic and highly engaged team of faculty and staff in the School of Business, all of whom are dedicated to the professional success of our students. The candidate will be expected to teach courses in financial management, business finance, investment analysis, portfolio management, and possibly other business courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (MBA, doctoral). They must also be student-focused and deeply committed to mission of both the School and the College.In addition to pursuing excellence in teaching, the successful candidate will mentor and advise undergraduate majors in both curricular and professional matters; they may also advise graduate research. Beyond their work with students, the candidate must show initiative in service to the department and the college and must demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarship and its classroom applications.RequirementsEssential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Teaching/Facilitation* Teaches courses in financial management, business finance, investment analysis and portfolio management at the undergraduate and M.B.A. levels.* Demonstrates an ability or potential for quality teaching, scholarly research, and service.* Plans course syllabus and assignments for semester of study to meet Hood College and departmental curriculum requirements utilizing a variety of teaching techniques.* Evaluates students' learning styles, interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable level of instruction and assignments.* Instructs students in course content and provides learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve course objectives.* Encourages class participation and provide assistance as appropriate to students in completing class assignments. Manages classroom interactions and establishes and maintains a climate that encourages learning.* Critiques performance on various assignments to measure the quality of learning, to build thinking skills, to challenge students' assumptions, and to reinforce concepts, which may include practical application of new skills.* Maintains regular office hours and contact with students as Works with student to address problems and resolve issues.* Accompanies students on field trips or other off-campus learning opportunities as appropriate.* Determines grades for assignments and for overall achievement in class. Provide appropriate documentation of grades to students and department as appropriate.* Other job-related duties as assigned.Research and ScholarshipFaculty in the School of Business represent diverse social science and management disciplines. Advanced ABDs and candidates with a master's degree in finance with significant teaching and/or professional experience will also be considered. Candidates should have teaching experience and a familiarity with small, liberal arts colleges.
