The Carver College of Medicine Department of Microbiology and Immunology (Dr. Gebhardt lab) is seeking a Research Assistant. This Research Assistant will perform a variety of routine and specialized experiments and procedures for the purpose of research into the control of gene expression in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii (gram-negative bacteria and opportunistic human pathogens).Position Summary:* According to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules, perform a variety of routine laboratory experiments and procedures, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy* Assist in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor* Perform the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study:* Maintain records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed* Maintain equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner* Sterilize and clean glassware, prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures* Inventory supplies, and mixing reagents* Processes orders for supplies for the laboratory.* Attend courses in safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, flammables, corrosive, and toxic materials* Caries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicant regulations and protocols* Conducts literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.* Attend courses, lectures, and conferences to further own knowledge or research and laboratory techniques, consulting with the other researchers and technicians to exchange information* Contribute to the team within and between departments and organizationPercent of Time: 100%Staff Type: Professional & ScientificType of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.Pay Grade: 3A - Highlights:* Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa* Fringe benefit package including paid vacation; sick leave; health, dental, life and disability insurance options; and generous employer contributions into retirement plans* For more information about Why Iowa?, click hereRequired Qualifications:* Requires a bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or Immunology, or a related field* Experience working in a microbiology, cell biology, immunology, or biochemistry laboratory* Excellent written and verbal communication skills* Basic knowledge of each of the following:* General microbiologic techniques, such as culture, storage, and safe handling of pathogenic agents* Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, agarose gel electrophoresis, and western blotting* Gathering, recording, and analyzing of experimental data* Data analysis and presentation software, such as Microsoft Excel, Prism, Microsoft Word, and Photoshop* Proficiency with each of the following:* Ability to effectively prioritize projects to consistently meet deadlines* Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment* Attention to detail and accuracy* Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment* Ability to work in a teamDesirable Qualifications:* Prior experience working with pathogenic microorganisms is desiredApplication Process: In order to be considered, applicants must upload a CV or resume, and cover letter (under submission relevant materials) that clearly address how they meet the listed required and desired qualifications of this position.Job openings are posted for a minimum of 14 calendar days and may be removed from posting and filled any time after the original posting period has ended.
