The role

Are you a power electronics engineer, RF electronics engineer, or an RF integrated circuit design engineer looking to apply your background to next generation power electronic conversion in pursuit of Carbon Net Zero? We are seeking a motivated interdisciplinary researcher to join the Electrical Energy Management Research Group, University of Bristol, to develop high-performance SiC and GaN power electronics, with the associated high-speed sensing and gate driving methods.

The successful candidate will work in renowned research team who carry out experimental research across high performance power conversion in electric vehicles and wind turbines, ultra-fast switching with GaN and SiC, active EMI mitigation, record-breaking high-resolution active gate driving, new sensing and instrumentation (e.g. Infinity current sensor), and related commercialisation activities. The role offers opportunity for industrial collaboration. The appointee will already demonstrate detailed knowledge in several of these areas and be supported to grow their expertise into the role and lead their own activities within the team.

For more details please see http://www.bristol.ac.uk/engineering/research/em/ , and the detailed job description.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will join the Electrical Energy Management Research Group under a supervisory team who will provide support, training opportunities and project guidance. The researcher will be involved at least some of the following activities (non-exhaustive):
  1. Learning relevant underpinning background material and application context, including input from industrial partners.
  2. Development of design tools and algorithms applicable to high-speed switching of SiC and GaN power semiconductor devices in converters in specific industrial applications.
  3. Bringing expertise to the research team and supporting others' learning.
  4. Electrical, thermal, and radio-frequency analysis of power converters and sub-systems.
  5. In-depth literature reviews and collation of data.
  6. Design of power electronic and sensing experiments, fabrication, and commissioning of test rigs for experimental validation of new ideas and hypotheses.
  7. Collaboration with industrial and internal or external academic partners.
  8. Engagement and management of engineering suppliers.
  9. Regular dissemination of findings via internal and external meetings and events.
  10. Publication of findings at appropriate international conferences and in journal proceedings.
  11. Mentoring of junior or cross-discipline researchers and PhD students.

Play an active role in the research group community for your own development and development of others.

You should apply if

You should apply if you are a motivated, collaborative, research engineer having a detailed background (PhD level or equivalent R&D experience) in power electronics, RF electronics, or RF or power integrated circuit design with a desire to apply your knowledge to multi-disciplinary engineering problems that help us reach Carbon Net Zero.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
