Associate Professor/Professor: ONE HEALTH (ONE POST)

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Fostering collaborative research by applying the One Health approach to address complex health-related problems including zoonoses and transboundary diseases that arise at the interfaces between human and animal populations, and the ecosystems in which they co-exist;
  • Participating in teaching and learning of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in the concepts of One Health;
  • Publication of research findings in peer reviewed international journals;
  • Writing of grants and generating income
  • Networking with relevant stakeholders
  • Participating in departmental and faculty administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department;
  • Rendering community and other service to farmers, the veterinary profession, industry and other clients as required;
  • Participating in self-development activities as outlined by the Head of the Department;
  • Co-ordinate and supervise field-based projects;
  • Line managing the staff based at the Hans Hoheisen Wildlife Research Platform at Orpen.


Associate Professor
  • An appropriate PhD-degree;
  • Significant national professional recognition;
  • Demonstrable experience in research, supported by 10 or more quality research-based full papers in national and international accredited journals with focus on Public Health and Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases, Zoonoses and Biosecurity ;
  • A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
  • Successful supervision of Masters students;
  • Evidence of involvement with PhD students;
  • Proof of the ability to attract independent research funding;
  • Participatory membership of professional bodies; and
  • Evidence of academic scholarship;
  • Evidence of community engagement;
  • Experience in field-based research.


In addition to the above-mentioned Associate Professor requirements:
  • Significant international professional recognition;
  • Substantial experience in research, supported by a sustained record and impact of publications in national and international accredited journals with focus on Public Health and Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases, Zoonoses and Biosecurity;
  • Successful supervision of several students on Masters, PhD and post-doctoral level;
  • Evidence of exceptional academic scholarship.

  • Proven competencies in epidemiology, research project design and data analysis;
  • Proven competencies in disease investigation, and health management interventions;
  • The ability to critically evaluate and interpret experimental results and articulate key findings within cross-functional teams;
  • Ability to lead research groups;
  • National and international acknowledgement of academic standing and leadership in the relevant academic discipline;
  • Good language and communication skills (written and verbal comprehension and verbal expression); and
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills.

  • National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist, or eligibility to apply for a rating.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
