The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a full-time, twelve-month research faculty position (non-tenure-track) at any level. The position is with the USU Bingham Research Center () and the performance location is Vernal, Utah (). The position begins in summer or fall 2023. Applicants should have a PhD in chemistry or a related discipline, with graduate, post-doctoral, or other experience in environmental chemistry, atmospheric science, industrial emissions, environmental modeling, or related fields.
The Bingham Research Center has ongoing, stable funding for research related to the atmospheric impacts of oil and gas development, wintertime ozone, and other air quality issues specific to eastern Utah. We expect applicants to demonstrate readiness to participate in these research areas, as well as an ability to develop an externally funded research program in areas of the applicants choice. The Bingham Center focuses on the environmental impacts of energy development and the chemistry of all compartments of the environment. Applicants research experience and plans should relate to these focuses.

This is a full-time, twelve-month appointment with a 90:10 division of effort between research and service. Teaching opportunities may arise but are not guaranteed. The successful candidate will be expected; (i) to carry out high-quality research, including external research funding, which achieves a strong national reputation for excellence in the field and (ii) to engage effectively in service (for example, Departmental/College/University committee service and outreach to stakeholders in government, industry, and the public).
The Bingham Research Centers mission is to perform research that benefits the local community, residents of Utah, and the world. Research results generated by the Bingham Research Center are regularly used by stakeholders in local, state, and federal governments (including elected officials); native American tribes; the energy industry; environmental advocacy organizations; and the public. Student involvement is also critical to the Bingham Centers mission. The successful applicant will mentor undergraduate and graduate students and involve students in research.

- Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication
Minimum and preferred qualifications for the research associate professor level include those listed for the research assistant professor level and also include:
- Experience writing grant proposals and obtaining research grant funding.
- Experience and a desire to mentor students and involve them in research.
- Experience and a desire to communicate research results to stakeholders and the public. This includes the abilities to (1) clearly explain scientific concepts to non-scientific audiences, and (2) respect a diversity of viewpoints and engage respectfully with diverse stakeholders, including those that may hold non-scientific views.
Minimum and preferred qualifications for the full research professor level include those listed for the research assistant professor level and also include:
- A consistent record of proposal writing and research funding over a period of at least five to seven years
- A consistent record of peer-reviewed publications and other research products over a period of at least five to seven years
- Recognition by peer scientists as a national expert in environmental chemistry, atmospheric science, industrial emissions, environmental modeling, or related fields
- A consistent record of proposal writing and research funding over a period of ten or more years, including salary funding for self and students or other researchers
- A consistent record of peer-reviewed publications and other research products over a period of ten or more years, including research products that demonstrate excellence and recognition by peer scientists
- Recognition by peer scientists as a national and international leader in environmental chemistry, atmospheric science, industrial emissions, environmental modeling, or related fields
Demonstration of research output that is impactful, original, and broadly significant
