Job Description
Senior Research Scientist I, Bioinformatics

Specific Responsibilities:

The Department of Clinical Bioinformatics at Gilead is seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatics Scientist to lead clinical biomarker and genomics data analysis. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment to support clinical development programs with a focus on developing predictive models on complex high-dimensional clinical data to support clinical development programs in various disease areas, including inflammatory and liver diseases, and virology.

Essential Functions:

Work with and lead colleagues to design and execute data analysis plans, and to summarize the actionable findings to support both exploratory research and new drug application activities.

Curate and analyze complex clinical data, including but not limited to protein assay data, genomics data from patient samples, and develop novel predictive models using statistical techniques and machine learning to support patient stratification and biomarker selection in clinical trials.

Develop and validate the analysis workflow, software applications, and data warehouse to improve visualization, integration, and accessibility of complex clinical biomarker and genomics data.

Design, develop, and implement methods, processes and systems to consolidate and analyze diverse data sets including structured and unstructured.

Develop software programs, algorithms, dashboards, information tools, and queries to clean, model, integrate and evaluate datasets.

Keep abreast of new analytic methodologies and technologies. Collaborate with functional business units to drive business solutions and direction.

Manage various bioinformatics systems and ensure pipeline validation and regulatory compliance.

Coach and develop junior scientists and staffs within the team.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

Ph.D. in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology or a related field with subsequent 2+ years of hands-on experience in bioinformatics and statistical modeling (4+ years' is preferred) or a MSc degree with 8+ years of hands-on experience in bioinformatics and statistical modeling.

Significant experience leading bioinformatics projects and project teams with a minimum of 2 years of cross-functional project management or leadership experience.

Proficient in R and Python with proven capabilities to manipulate large and multi-dimensional datasets. Experience with SAS is a plus.

Strategic thinker and outstanding team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrated track record producing models and actionable insights using advanced statistical and/or ML methods.

Experience working with large data sets using distributed computing tools is a plus.

Experience training others in bioinformatics principles, practices and tools is a plus.

Knowledge of biology in inflammatory diseases, virology, and/or oncology is a plus.
