Department Summary


The College of Humanities and the Arts operates a faculty-led student marketing team that is responsible for creating marketing materials for the College and the Hammer Theater. Four instructors, of graphic design, photography, videography, and professional/technical writing, each teach a relevant section of HA 187 Creative Team Practicum . The goal of this course is to create an on-campus opportunity for hands-on practical application of concepts and skills for students from a variety of disciplines (Technical Writing, Film, Photography, Graphic Design) to learn and to collaborate in a fast-paced environment that produces real-world deliverables and is representative of work environments that graduates of these majors are likely to encounter in the beginning of their professional careers. The team produces logos, ad-blasts, posters, ads, brochures, flyers, digital banners, programs, blue postcards, web site content plus articles or written text for e-newsletters (Hammer's Applause ; School of Music's Upbeat ), blogs and/or magazines (H&A's Expressions ), video and photography. The work of the marketing team is coordinated by a project manager.

Brief Description of Duties

The College of Humanities and the Arts is searching for a part-time faculty to encourage critical thinking and iterative concept development within class assignments. We are especially seeking a professional writer with a well-established record of professional writing to teach HA 187 Creative Team Practicum . The successful candidate will collaborate with the Marketing and Communications project manager and the other faculty teaching the HA 187 sections in guiding the students in the team to create marketing materials for the College and the Hammer Theater. Lecturers are also required to participate in 1-2 faculty meetings each semester and provide assessment data and information to the College.
  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
  • Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) .
  • All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Required Qualifications
  • Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing or Poetry.
  • A clear demonstration of scholastic/artistic achievement, as evidenced by a current record of publications.
  • Teaching experience in creative writing at the university level is required. Strong writing skills and an ability to direct and assess student writing within the context of a fast-paced class with real-world tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of writing teaching experience at the university level. Experience with professional writing beyond academic settings.

Salary Range - Commensurate with experience within ranks established by the CSU Salary Schedule .

Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the "Order of Work," or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
