About this Role:
The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL; http://www.ksvdl.org/) and Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology (DMP; https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/dmp/), College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University seek an enthusiastic clinical pathologist, a collaborative team player with a keen sense of humor for the position of Clinical Pathology Laboratory Section Head (rank Clinical Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). The KSVDL is a full-service, AAVLD-accredited laboratory, offering a complete range of diagnostic services for all species. The DMP is comprised of faculty with expertise in pathology, immunology, infectious disease, epidemiology, toxicology, and oncology.
Duties/Responsibilities
The candidate will join a pathology team of clinical pathologists, and anatomic pathologists. The candidate will be a leader in building our clinical pathology residency program and oversee medical technologists in the state-of-the-art KSVDL clinical pathology lab. This position carries an appointment of 70-85% diagnostic service. Diagnostic service responsibilities will focus on laboratory management, with an emphasis on quality management and diagnostic cases in accordance with AAVLD and ASVCP guidelines. As laboratory section head this individual works in conjunction with the lab supervisor to oversee the daily operation of the lab and lab personnel. In addition, quality management duties will include but are not limited to, developing and implementing strategies for test validation, test verification, species-specific reference interval establishment, laboratory process improvement, and documentation. A smaller portion of the diagnostic service responsibilities will include evaluation and interpretation of cytology, hematology, chemistry, fluid, and serum protein electrophoresis samples and consultation with clinicians, house officers, and veterinary students. The remaining 15-30% of the appointment is divided between clinical teaching and mentorship (mentoring of residents and interns) and other scholarly activities. Opportunities exist for collaborative and clinical investigative research. The chosen candidate is expected to follow the KSVDL quality management system documents and processes and the AAVLD Standard.
