We are looking for an independent robotics researcher who is interested in spending a year collaborating with our research team, as a visiting scholar, to drive the state-of-the-art in robotic manipulation forward. This position will have a very high degree of autonomy; we're looking for someone who has an existing research agenda in mind. We will support, and collaborate with you while you drive this agenda forward and we'll spend the year learning from each other.

This is a one-year long assignment starting in Fall 2022.

An ideal candidate has a strong track record of leading independent research efforts, preferably including mentoring and collaborating with less experienced students and researchers. A current postdoc looking to take an additional year of research before beginning a faculty position would be a great fit for this role, as would a more experienced existing faculty member looking to take a year-long sabbatical with us. This position requires a hands-on researcher who has interest in not only formulating research ideas, but also implementing and evaluating them in collaboration with our team. We expect this position to result in peer-reviewed publications, including the potential for ongoing long-term collaboration with TRI.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a research effort to advance the state-of-the-art in robotic manipulation across a diverse set of subfields including optimization, control, machine learning, reinforcement learning, and/or computer vision.
  • Implement research ideas and conduct scientifically sound evaluations of those ideas.
  • Collaborate with our diverse team of internal engineers and researchers.
  • Collaborate with our partner research institutions and universities.
  • Take the lead on writing and publishing research results in peer-reviewed venues.


Qualifications
  • A PhD in a robotics-relevant field such as Computer Science, Mathematics, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • A strong track record of independent research.
  • Ability to independently formulate, and execute on, a research agenda while interfacing with collaborators across a spectrum of disciplines.
  • Sufficient software-engineering proficiency to implement and evaluate research ideas. We generally work in C++ and Python internally and comfort with either of those languages is a strong bonus.
