We are seeking a Senior Biological Data Scientist to play a leading role in APL's future in biological defense and health security. Building upon a rich legacy in bio-surveillance, bio-defense, and public health, we seek to hire an innovator who enjoys working at the nexus of experimental biology and data science. APL works across the US Government applying the full spectrum of science and engineering to improve the nation's ability to safely mitigate biological threats. We partner closely across the whole of the Johns Hopkins enterprise, and with collaborators in government, academia, and industry, to develop innovative science and technology solutions to bio-security challenges. You will shape and advance a comprehensive strategy focused on bringing together biological and data science to push innovative advances in national and global security against threats posed by infectious disease and emerging biotechnologies.
You will leverage your technical expertise and passion for applied research to lead the development of new proposals for intramural and extramural research aimed at pursuing high-risk, high-reward ideas.
You will build and lead strong teams with APL scientists and engineers to conduct the vital research required to turn these ideas into solutions that will be delivered to civilian and military sponsors in our National Health and Homeland Protection mission areas.
You will influence priorities in hiring and infrastructure development to helping ensure APL has the breadth and depth of needed skills and facilities across all relevant biological specializations.

- Have a Ph.D. in a scientific discipline, such as biological sciences, biostatistics, computer science, or other relevant fields.
- Have at least twelve (12) years of professional research experience in applied life sciences, research in biomedical, infectious disease, health security, and/or bio-defense domains.
- Have a demonstrated record of technical leadership in the collaborative development and application of data science techniques for solving complex challenges in health-security and emerging infectious disease, exemplified in an active S&T research portfolio, publications, and collaborations.
- Have project management experience moving ideas from concept development through execution and close out, with a demonstrated track record of attracting funding as a principal investigator.
- Bring demonstrated excellence in the following areas applied to emerging infectious disease and biological threats:
Leading research, development, and/or implementation of autonomous systems and/or Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) projects and capabilities Proficiency with a variety of analytical tools including languages such as Python or R Identifying targeted data sources to support analysis requests and familiarity with data munging, data wrangling, data mining, and data exploration techniques
Have excellent communications skills, including the ability to convey complex technical ideas to diverse audiences and demonstrated success in briefing high-level sponsors and executive leadership.
Are willing and able to travel to sponsor and partner sites.
