Associate Laboratory Director for Earth and Environmental Sciences Area
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Associate Laboratory Director for our Earth & Environmental Sciences Area , a world leader in climate, environmental and energy geosciences. Reporting to the Laboratory Director, the Associate Laboratory Director is accountable for strategic planning, people and operations leadership, research quality and integrity, and communication for the Earth & Environmental Sciences Area. The Associate Laboratory Director is also responsible for advancing Berkeley Lab's stewardship values of team science, innovation, trust, respect, and service, including building and maintaining a culture that is committed to the ideals of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability.

The Associate Laboratory Director will lead the development of strategies for harnessing Berkeley Lab's innovative, multidisciplinary capabilities to contribute to solving the most pressing energy and environmental challenges of our time. Our next director will have the opportunity to build on the Area's strategic research path set in 2017, and develop new scientific directions and solutions to optimize and sustain the environment, while satisfying growing needs for energy and water resources that will have great impact nationally and globally. The director interacts with external sponsors and other national laboratories, promotes partnerships with academia and industry, and guides the development of externally sponsored research projects and programs consistent with the Laboratory's overall vision and strategy. They also share responsibility for maintaining productive relationships with the Department of Energy (DOE) offices that support Earth science research, notably the Office of Basic Energy Science, Biological and Environmental Research, Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and Nuclear Energy.

As a key member of the Laboratory's Senior Leadership Team, this position works closely with the Laboratory Director and Deputy Laboratory Directors to formulate and execute Berkeley Lab's strategic priorities and initiatives. Together with the other Associate Laboratory Directors, they will actively participate in institutional research and management initiatives, developing cross-Area research proposals and shepherding these efforts through their life cycle. The Associate Laboratory Director will work with their management teams and Operations staff to develop and execute priorities for facility operations and planning. Lastly, while Associate Lab Directors have often continued active research programs at Berkeley Lab, this is not required of the successful candidate.

About Berkeley Lab and the Earth & Environmental Sciences Area:
When it was founded over 90 years ago in 1931, Berkeley Lab ushered in a new way of doing science based on building large teams of researchers from different fields, along with engineers, mathematicians, machinists, and accountants, to tackle significant scientific challenges together. This approach has led to Berkeley Lab researchers winning 14 Nobel Prizes and a research portfolio that includes significant and often world-leading programs in physics, chemistry, materials sciences, advanced computing, scientific networking, biosciences, energy and energy technologies, and environmental sciences. "Team Science" remains an integral part of Berkeley Lab's DNA, where research is carried out across multiple scientific disciplines.

The Earth & Environmental Sciences Area is a premier Earth sciences research organization where scientists are tackling some of the most pressing environmental and energy challenges of the 21st Century to enable sustainable stewardship and judicious use of the Earth's resources. The Area's 500 employees are distributed across the Climate and Ecosystem Sciences and the Energy Geosciences Divisions. The Area's world-class research programs in climate and environmental sciences, as well as for subsurface energy resource strategies (including fossil, geothermal, carbon sequestration and nuclear waste storage) are supported by DOE's Offices of Biological and Environmental Research; Basic Energy Sciences; Fossil Energy; and Nuclear Energy. Our scientists are using collaborative teamwork to discover the scientific underpinnings important for sustaining healthy soil and clean water, sequestering atmospheric carbon, using subsurface resources responsibly, and developing strategies for resilience in a changing world. These advances are changing our predictive understanding of interactions and feedbacks across Earth's compartments, from atmosphere to ecosystems to deep subsurface. Learn more about the Area here .
