What You Will Do

Are you looking to increase your experimental geochemistry skills while solving problems of national importance? The Earth Systems Observation Group (EES-14) in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has multiple openings for postdoctoral research associates in experimental geochemistry. The selected individuals will work in multidisciplinary teams that perform experiments under a range of geochemical conditions and use advanced computational techniques to answer questions relevant to one or more of the following focus areas:
  • The speciation, reactivity, structure, and transport of radionuclides under a variety of geochemical conditions including high temperature and pressure;
  • Extraction and separation of critical mineral resources;
  • Science of signatures and the use of stable isotopic signatures and tracers to answer questions related to transport phenomena under various geochemical conditions;
  • Impact of radiation on materials performance, including gas generation and permeability changes;
  • Thermodynamic and structural characterization of nuclear materials with special emphasis on calorimetry and the use of synchrotron techniques to characterization complex nuclear materials;
  • Chemistry under extreme conditions and propagation of nuclear signatures through the earth
  • Energy applications including carbon capture, mineralization, and reactivity under supercritical conditions.

Candidates will work collaboratively with a team of scientists who share your enthusiasm for laboratory work and creative problem solving/innovation. Together, we will enable you to publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present your work at high profile conferences. The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability. LANL is a diverse organization and we encourage applicants with diverse backgrounds.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in a STEM field
  • Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Hands-on experience conducting research in a laboratory environment

Education/Experience: Candidates must have received a Ph.D. within the last five years in a STEM field, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Communication skills as evidenced by publications and oral presentations at conferences
  • The ability to work through problems using innovation/creative problem solving
  • Laboratory experience measuring and identifying mineral phases
  • Experience with geochemical reaction characterization including reactivity under extreme conditions
  • Experience with high temperature/pressure systems
  • Experience using laboratory experiments to measure transport phenomena including the use of tracers and stable isotope signatures
  • Experience with or strong interest in thermodynamic and reactive transport modeling
  • Experience with using synchrotron techniques to resolve structure and speciation of materials
  • Experience measuring the effect of radiation on materials performance
  • Experience in the field of carbon capture and mineralization
  • Experience characterizing shale and oil-rich carbonate phases using techniques such as neutron scattering to understand pore structure and gas storage in geological formations
  • Experience or exposure to proposal development and writing

Note to Applicants:

The application package consists of a CV and a cover letter. Your cover letter should explicitly address how you meet each of the minimum requirements and any of the desired skills, if applicable. No applicant is expected to have all of the desired skills. Anyone who meets the minimum requirements is encouraged to apply. Applicants will be screened immediately. Candidates with questions can contact Nathan Conroy (nconroy@lanl.gov).

LANL offers competitive salary and benefits. Details can be found here. Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious J. Robert Oppenheimer, Richard P. Feynman, or Frederick Reines Fellowships. For general information about the application processes and LANL fellowships refer to the LANL Postdoctoral Program page.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

COVID Vaccine:

The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires.
