About us and the roles

The University of Southampton Doctoral College is a focal point for the training and development of doctoral researchers across the University. We work in partnership with Faculty Graduate Schools and Professional Services. We aim to provide an inspiring and vibrant environment for doctoral research and to equip doctoral researchers with the skills to join the next generation of research leaders.

Our Doctoral College team members supporting doctoral researcher development are located within The Centre for Higher Education Practice (CHEP), which provides professional development support for academic staff and doctoral researchers at the University of Southampton. The Centre is located with Southampton's Faculty of Social Sciences but serves the whole University.

CHEP was created to provide comprehensive world-leading professional development for all staff and doctoral researchers at all stages of their career development across the life course. We are one of only a few institutions in which the support for all academic activity (Education, Research and Knowledge Exchange & Enterprise (KEE)) is provided from the same central team and we are in the process of expanding the team that supports Research and KEE, including doctoral researchers. We play a pivotal role in supporting the realisation of the University of Southampton's Strategy and our set up means we are ideally suited to support the Triple Helix approach of our strategy.

Applications are invited for five new academic development posts as part of a team who will focus on supporting the professional development of postgraduate researchers, including their research, transferable and teaching/demonstrating skills.

About You

This is an exciting opportunity for experienced researchers or educators to join our friendly and supportive team and use their knowledge and expertise to help expand and enhance our institution-wide support for postgraduate researchers. The post-holders will contribute to the design, development, delivery and evaluation of professional development and strategic major project activities offered by CHEP to support the realisation of the University of Southampton's Strategy (in particular, the People & Research strategies) as these relate to postgraduate researcher development and the work of the Doctoral College. These roles focus on professional development to support doctoral researchers in their research and professional skills development at all stages of their studies, as well as their developing skills in teaching and learning. However, there may also be opportunities to contribute to other areas of CHEP's work, including supporting staff engaged in research, knowledge exchange and enterprise, and education.

All academic development posts within our Centre are academic appointments within the education focused aspect of our ERE pathway (because they support the learning of staff in all aspects of their academic practice) and as such they come with the common title of academic developers within our team ('Senior Teaching Fellow in Academic Practice'). However, please note these roles will primarily support doctoral researchers in one of the following areas: their research and professional skills development, pastoral care and study skills, or their skills in teaching and demonstrating. These opportunities are available at level 4 (Teaching Fellow) or 5 (Senior Teaching Fellow) as full-time roles, part-time and/or as part of a job share. This job is also available as a secondment opportunity for existing University of Southampton Staff. We are most interested in applications from individuals from 50% and above but are open to a conversation with those who wish to work less hours.
