SENIOR LECTURER

The African Tax Institute in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences is looking for someone who can further that competitive advantage, and, therefore, is able to bring something innovative to the institute, as well as someone able to extend the institute's international reach and its research network.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The African Tax Institute is looking for a highly qualified person with the potential to establish a reputation in tax policy and institutional economics to strengthen its research, teaching and broader international profile. Responsibilities will include:

  • Lecturing and supervision of master's and doctoral students in tax policy as it relates to state-society relations, the social contract and broad societal outcomes in developing countries specifically from an interdisciplinary perspective, including the ability to design new master's modules as the need arises;
  • Research in aspects of state-society relations, including the fundamental causes of poverty through the lenses of institutionalism, anthropology, evolutionary psychology and political science in a developing country context, that can be published in interdisciplinary, highly regarded international journals and scholarly books;
  • Active development and extension of current research networks to further develop the institute's international network of researchers;
  • Preparation and submission of proposals and applications to external bodies, e.g. for funding and accreditation purposes;
  • Active participation in the institute's programmes;
  • Involvement in professional activities where applicable;
  • Conducting and leading advanced research in relevant fields of specialisation;
  • Performing administrative duties as delegated by the director of the African Tax Institute.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A doctoral degree with a specialisation in tax policy as it relates to state-society relations, the social contract and broad societal outcomes in developing countries;
  • At least one accepted accredited publication or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs (revise and resubmits will be considered as proof of ability);
  • Demonstrated experience in postgraduate students supervision;
  • Teaching experience.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • The ability to independently plan and initiate discipline-related teaching and research;
  • The ability to integrate work from a variety of related disciplines;
  • Appropriate language proficiency and communication skills;
  • Computer literacy.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Evidence of the potential to develop and implement a sustained research portfolio that can, in future, receive national and international recognition, e.g. publications already in print or manuscripts forthcoming;
  • Evidence of the ability to complete research, supervise research and lead research seminars in relevant fields of expertise.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
