The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a need for a Laboratory Research Associate to support our government customer located at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Edgewood, MD.
  • Perform routine large and small animal laboratory tasks.
  • Read, understand, and execute techniques, procedures, and plans to meet requirements of quality standards, national standards of research technical accuracy, other relevant written guidelines, and timelines prescribed by the research plan and based on professional judgment.
  • Perform health checks, weigh, and feed animals according to protocol.
  • Transfer, pair house and separate animals.
  • Assist research team with behavioral competence and compliance
  • Set-up equipment (such as test panels, scales, monitors, telemetry, chairs, or other equipment) to prepare for experiments.
  • Collect and store experimental samples and data and maintain accurate records of controlled substance use and chemical agents as required by USAMRICD guidelines.
  • Create entries in medical records, conduct health checks, performance of handling and restraint of animals.
  • Compile and analyze experimental data
  • Conduct operant behavioral training/testing in variuos species

Required Degree / Education / Certification:
  • Master's degree.

Required Skills And Experience:
  • 8 years experience
  • Prior experience with nonhuman primates (NHPs) and small animals
  • Direct experience conducting operant behavioral training/testing in multiple species.
  • Knowledge of pharmacolgy and neuroscience as applied to medical chemical defense research
  • Must be familiar with preparation of chemical solutions, use of microscopes and pipettes, biological sample collection and processing, general laboratory safety, and other tasks customary to a laboratory setting.
  • Capable of learning the additional skills needed as necessary for the execution of the research project(s).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic computer programs (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, and reference management program(s) and have the capacity to learn specialized computer programs for collection of behavioral data.
  • Ability to work independently or with others.

Desired Skills And Experience:
  • Previous experience with NHPs or other laboratory animals in behavioral training
  • Experience with pairing/socialization of laboratory animals
  • Experience training other personnel on behavior techniques

Required Citizenship And Clearance
  • US Citizenship required; Secret Clearance (can start with interim)
